image Advisories!: - Microsoft releases a patch for MDAC - (reminder) image
Security Hole
We all wish to reach a ripe old age, but none of us
are prepared to admit that we are already there.

- Microsoft releases a patch for MDAC -
Oxygen3 24h-365d, by Panda Software (http://www.pandasoftware.com)

Madrid, August 25, 2003 - Microsoft has released a patch that fixes a
security flaw detected in versions 2.5 to 2.7 of Microsoft Data Access
Components, more commonly known as MDAC. This vulnerability could allow
attackers to run code of their choice on the affected computer.

This vulnerability lies in Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), a
collection of components that are used to provide database connectivity on
Windows platforms.

Microsoft has rated this flaw important, as if successfully exploited,
attackers could gain the same level of privileges on the affected computer
as the application that sent the broadcast request to MDAC.

The problem occurs when a client in a network tries to view the list of
computers running SQL Server. Due to a flaw in a specific MDAC, malicious
users could reply to this request with a specially crafted packet that would
cause a buffer overflow and allow attackers to run code of their choice.

More information about this vulnerability and the patch that fixes it are
available in the Microsoft security bulletin at:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-033.asp.
