E-Commerce Sales Up 6.6 Pct in Third Quarter
WASHINGTON (Reuters)
U.S. retail sales over the Internet grew 6.6 percent in the third quarter of this year to $13.29 billion, the Commerce Department said on Friday.
Compared with the same quarter a year ago, so-called e-commerce sales - when orders are placed over the Internet, other electronic networks or by e-mail - were up 27 percent.
The department's measure of e-commerce sales for the second quarter was revised down a notch to a gain of 4.5 percent.
E-commerce sales accounted for 1.5 percent of overall retail sales in the third quarter, the same as in the first two quarters of the year.
Unlike most economic indicators released by the government, the data are not adjusted to account for seasonal or holiday-related variations, restricting their usefulness to analysts. The department began separately tracing e-commerce sales in late 1999.
