New Internet Scam Has Philly DA On Guard
Nov 29, 2003 11:29 am US/Eastern
PHILADELPHIA (KYW 1060) Scams are a dime a dozen during the holiday shopping period, and unfortunately the victims often lose far more than a dime. Philadelphia D.A. Lynne Abraham has a warning about a new Internet scam.
D.A. Lynne Abraham says the lastest holiday season Internet scam involves e-mails purporting to be about your credit card bill. The message says you've wracked up huge purchases and if they're not correct, type in your credit car number. People think that they're going to get charged for something that they never bought, so they're providing their bank identification card, their social security card numbers.
And of course once they submit those numbers they've been scammed. Abraham says never type in personal information in response to such an e-mail -- call the credit card company's 800 number on the back of the card and ask if the message is legit.
