Phishing surge at AOL in 2004 |
|
|
Direct Marketers reports on America Online seeing a sharp surge in phishing and identify theft scams during 2004. Compared to 2003, none of the top 10 spam email subjects were from phishers. "By impersonating trusted brands such as Citibank and eBay, phishers are able to get a 5 percent response rate, according to the APWG." Even though the CAN-SPAM act has caught the mom and pop spam shops, the hard core spammers are still in operation.
