Proxomitron
This afternoon (16 Jul) presented itself with grave news when Scott's sister notified me that her brother, Scott R. Lemmon, passed away on the first of May, 2004. Many of you know Scott as the author of Proxomitron, the local web proxy that changed so many peoples lives on the Internet. TechTV presented a whole segment on the Proxomitron application. Scott's genius is very evident in his legacy to the World Wide Web in fighting spyware and protecting their privacy thru Proxomitron. Everyone loved Scott and his work. A simple search of the full P word at Google reveals 259,000 matches. His work touched so many lives.

I first met Scott about three years ago when looking for a privacy application to protect me while surfing. I tried WebWasher, Naviscope, Junkbuster, and others including Proxomitron. After some rigorous testing Proxomitron took first prize, above and beyond all others. I was in awe of the work Scott was doing at the time and so took up the cause to learn about it and help others like so many wonderful users do even today.

Scott offered the program under a license: Shonenware. This means if you liked Proxomitron (Proxo) and wished to contribute financially, Scott asked folks to buy a CD of Shonen Knife. He asked for nothing more in return, and in my knowing Scott, he very much enjoyed working with users to help them secure their browsing privacy.

Forums and website came to life all over the world, in all kinds of tongues. Computer Cops became an official download and support site, joining a big list of official supporters. And true to his self, Scott even hosted the forum onsite.

He was a man apart from any other. With all the intense development and support, he still had time to visit all the forums and make everyone feel special. Scott showed consistently how deep and wide his net of care and love went. Personally, his work touched me more than anyone else to-date. I talked about Scott and the work he did consistently to all my friends and colleagues. I will sorely miss my friend, as I'm sure the whole Internet community will lament his passing. Even after work on Proxomitron had ended, a tribute site went online.

I'd like to personally wish my sincerest condolences for Scott's family in their time of mourning and great loss. As much an impact as he's made on our lives, his genius could have only been truly understood and appreciated by those closest to him. Thank you Scott for sharing yourself and your work with us, the community-at-large, your family online. You are sorely missed oh great one, but your legacy lives on.

Note: This article will be shared with Scott's family. So please leave comments if you wish.
Update 17 Jul: Scott was born in January 1968. He passed at the age of 36.

After reading this article, I was in shock for close to 30 minutes.

I am greatly saddened by his passing, and I wish you, Paul, his family, and the Proxomitron community all the best during this difficult time.

Thank you for announcing it.

I am in shock since I read about this at DSLReports a few minutes ago. There are tears in my eyes and my throat is tight and aching. I admired Scott so much. Proxo is the most important application I have. I can't imagine ever being without it. Scott was brillant and his gift to the community of internet users will shine long and bright. My prayers and deep sympathy go out to Scott's family. I consider myself blessed to have gotten Proxo while Scott was still working on it and to have talked with him here at Computer Cops. He was so patient and helpful with beginners and Proxo offers itself in simplicity and complexity for all to use and enjoy. I cannot think of any other application that has had so much impact on my use and enjoyment of the internet. I will be eternally in Scott's debt and it was great genorosity that led Scott to give all of us this wonderful application and then to patiently support it here and elsewhere. Rest in peace and know that we will carry Proxo's torch long and high.

When Leonardo da Vinci died somebody took care of his papers and made sure they were not destroyed.
That is why we know so much about his ideas and how he developed them.

I hope Scotts relatives understand how valuable his working material regarding Proxomitron is and do not simply throw his computer away or let somebody destroy its contents.

Ideally his source code and other working material should be given to some responsible person who can decide what can be public and what parts are just private notes which have no public value.

The community of proxomitron users would benefit very much if we could continue to develop Proxomitron as open source freeware.

Sorry to take up this issue so soon after his death but this may be the last chance we have to be in contact with his relatives.

I didn't have that strong a personal connection to Scott, since I never met him in person, but I certainly knew him better from his writings and correspondences with me than I did, say, Ronald Reagan. I still won't shed tears but I am saddened that mankind won't benefit further from his presence.

Although Scott probably didn't lead a devout pauper's existence and did seek some returns on his wonderful contributions to software, he also had a very egalitarian and academic soul, and never sought to jealously guard every scrap of knowledge he learned. He shared as much as he got, and I perhaps respected him more for that shared attitude than anything else.

In light of that, I hope Scott's family will see fit to contribute some of his software efforts to the open source movement, perhaps as a Sourceforge project; if Scott were alive to reflect on it, I suspect that's what he would choose to do. I'd like to see Proxomitron continue to evolve and grow, as a sort of living legacy to a Lemmon that was anything but... a lemon.

As I sit here in shock, I feel a deep sense of loss. The world has lost a great one.

It amazes me how Scott touched the lives of so many people, most of whom never knew him, most of whom he never knew. His contribution to the world, and the generosity he displayed by seeking nothing in return, will never be forgotten.

Although this is undoubtedly a difficult time for Scott's family and friends, I hope they take comfort in knowing that Scott's life will continue to be celebrated. I am grateful that my path crossed his, albeit through the anonymity of the Internet.

Thank you, Scott. Thank you for making our little corner of the world better. You will be missed.

I am a very happy user of proxomitron. I only knew Mr Lemmon through his creation of this software and his webpage. I sadly did not come into the community until after he had stopped development and himself withdrawn from the various groups of proxomitron. Let me say I regret not knowing him better.

I was saddened when development stopped on proxomitron, and the loss of the creator has removed one of my remaining hopes that he may one day come back and continue to improve the great proxomitron. I have often suggested a donation or payment based plan to continue work on the proxomitron, but now from posts I have read I think I understand why he wouldn't want it to be commercial software.

I hope somewhere and somehow the torch can be passed to someone in the community or to the entire community to continue development on the proxomitron. I would hate for his internet legacy to pass with him.

My sincere condolences to Mr Lemmon's family, and I hope he Rest's in Peace.

Whoa. I am stunned and very saddened by this
terrible news.

I feel that Scott was a genius when he thought of
Proxomitron. A few years ago, something like
Proxomitron was optional when surfing the web.
This is no longer the case, and we have Scott to
thank for. His diligence and dedication through
his work on Proxomitron is worth remembering
and learning from. While I was unhappy about
him abandoning further development in Proxomitron,
I respected his decision.

His legacy will live on in Proxomitron and he will
always be remembered for the product that
protected users from the malware out there
on the web.

Rest in Peace, Scott. You will be sorely missed.
Also, I'd like to give my heartfelt belated condolences to

Personally, this had already been an incredibly sad and difficult
week for me...and then came the news of Scott's passing.  To say it
was a shock would be an understatement, it just seemed so unreal.

I did want to express something sooner, but I couldn't even begin...
I'm sorry it took me this long.

How my heart goes out to his family.

Flowers, opening
  meet wind and rain;
Human life
  is full of partings.

(Written by hpguru for Scott, to the prox-list at Yahoo Groups.)

What a beautiful haiku...and so very appropriate and touching.
(To hpguru...I also want you to know this was a comfort to me as
well for other reasons at this time.  Thank you.)

I miss Scott.  Not a day will go by that I won't think of him.
Every time I glance at his little green icon, it will remind me
how brilliant Scott was, how very giving and helpful...and too,
of his humor.  Although he didn't speak much about his personal
life, he clearly expressed himself in his work:  His nature, his
Being, is right there in Proxomitron.  It was also his channel
through which he continued to reveal himself.  Yes, we knew him.
And we loved him.

How grateful I am that he shared that part of his life.  A part
which literally became a part of our own, in such an amazingly
interesting, extremely satisfying...and every day way.

Even so, I feel a terrible loss...I really don't have the words
to express that.  I found it good to read what others had to say.
And seeing discussions about the Proxomitron continue...that, too.

Such, especially, is the best tribute to Scott that I can imagine.

I 'met' Scott through his web site yesterday. He was a clever, insiteful, and humerous man, the kind you want to invite into your life. I had hoped to do just that, for my wife and I enjoyed his web page repartee concerning Proxomitron and Shonenware. His software is some of the best I have ever seen, and I am a poweruser; I don't usually like to use other peoples software unless I have to or it is really good. It is a shock to find out the day after I 'met' him, that he has passed on. He has impressed me greatly, and I am saddened by the fact that I shall never get to meet him in real life.
I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones, and everyone else out here that he has touched with his works and wit. Though I have only 'known' him for a day he will be sorely missed. We need more like him on this Earth.

Hi. I have been Scott's friend for the last 11 years and I know his family well. I knew him in a different way than most of you as I have only had a limited interest in computers, but he was a patience friend who always helped this novice out whenever she needed it. We shared a love of the Beatles, Violent Femmes and it was because of him I bought a Shonene Knife album. Anyway, today, I was thinking about him missing him something awful and wishing that more people could've known what an incredible person he was and I found this site and all of your comments. It helped me to see that Scott lives on through his work and through the memories of those who knew him both on and offline. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

It was a shock to read this article.

When Scott stopped developing The Proxomitron, i no longer wanted to be a member of the Proxomitron community because without Scott at the helm it was not the same anymore. Proxomitron was not just an excellent program, to me the real strength was the unique community of people who were inspired and supported by Scott to create all sorts of filters for Proxomitron that made browsing the internet much nicer. I really enjoyed the times when i wrote filters for Proxomitron. If i did not understand something about Proxomitron, Scott was always there to answer my questions and to give advice.

Scott was a bit of a mystery to me. I always wanted to know more about this guy who kept much of his personal life private but donated a lot of his time and talent to other people without wanting anything in return. There are too few people like him in this world. Sadly, sometimes they don't get the life here on earth that they deserve. I will remember Scott Lemmon as a special person and i offer my sincerest condolences to his family.
