Microsoft Optical Mouse Owner:

As you are aware, Microsoft® mouse products enjoy a reputation for dependability and reliability backed by one of the best Limited Warranty offers in the industry. Microsoft has received reports that a small percentage of IntelliMouse® Explorer, IntelliMouse Optical and Wheel Mouse Optical mouse products have stopped working or have begun to work intermittently after a period of normal use. Symptoms of this condition may include the cursor not moving, mouse buttons not responding or the red tail-light not illuminating. It is also possible that this condition may cause the computer or an open program to stop responding (hang) during or immediately following mouse movements. (If your computer stops responding or hangs without moving the mouse, this is unrelated to the condition described herein.)

If you live in the United States, and your IntelliMouse Explorer, IntelliMouse Optical or Wheel Mouse Optical should stop working or begin to work intermittently after normal use, Microsoft will replace the mouse free of charge under the terms of the product’s Limited Warranty. If your mouse is now outside the Limited Warranty Period but stopped working within the Limited Warranty Period, Microsoft will still replace it free of charge, provided that you send in the coupon below and required proof of purchase within 90 days from the date of this notice. If your Limited Warranty Period has expired, Microsoft will extend it for 90 days from the date of this notice. If you have previously contacted Microsoft Product Support with regard to your mouse and are no longer eligible for no-charge personal support, Microsoft will waive any fee for paid personal support related to this condition. To receive your replacement mouse, if your current mouse is not working properly:

Print and fill out a coupon (downloadable below) with your name, address, phone number and Product ID number printed on the bottom of your mouse.

1. Enclose proof of purchase. The eligible forms of proof of purchase include:
2. A copy of your store receipt. Please write the Product ID number on the receipt.
3. A copy of your credit card receipt or monthly statement. Please write the Product ID number on the receipt or statement.
4. The original label from your box containing the bar code. Cut it from the box and enclose it. Please write the Product ID number on it.
5. A photocopy of the bottom of your mouse showing the Product ID number. If the Product ID number is not clearly legible, please write in on the copy.

You only need to send one of these forms of proof of purchase. You do not have to buy a new Microsoft optical mouse. Microsoft will send you a new optical mouse if you have a qualifying product.

Note: You will need to download the free Adobe Acrobat Readerin order to view and print the coupon.

I'm definitely not trying to slam MS optical mice. Let me get that out first. I've used 2 versions of Intellimouse Explorer and a simple optical mouse by MS before that. This last Christmas I received a wireless Intellimouse Explorer. It worked pretty good. Nothing stellar, but still pretty good. After reading an article and review from Maximum PC, I decided to try a Logitech MouseMan Dual Optical. The Mouseware software was absolute crap. Even after updating the drivers, I still had some major problems. These problems were mostly regarding the wheel and games. I frequently reinstall my operating system, ask why if you must. The last time I reinstalled, I simply neglected to install the logitech mouse drivers. Windows 98SE recognized my mouse, or rather a mouse, and allowed it to work flawlessly. The only stipulation is that my thumb button performs the exact same function as my wheel button(same as third button). However, this is not a big deal to me since I use Opera and its mouse gestures for navigating the internet. This Logitech mouse is awesome. No other optical mouse has passed my simple little test. Move your mouse in a cicular motion as fast as you can on the screen. Intelimouse Explorers will go nuts or freeze in one spot. Don't tell me it doesn't because I have tried this with several different computers with many different operating systems. I know it does. Not the Logitech MouseMan Dual Optical. It tracks perfectly all of the time. I was really heavy into Unreal Tournament when I was shopping for a mouse. As far as optical mice go, this one fits the bill for FPS games.
