AVG is still there. I checked in the task manager as well and all 3 avg processes I mentioned in an earlier post are still running.
I noticed when I ran the bat file in safemode that there was an error in the...dos prompt window? Something about not recognizing the command? If I was a smarter man I would have remembered but...no I's not...poo
Avast still warns me on start up of the rootkit. Not sure if it was suppose to be gone yet or not?
And oops I was suppose to uninstall tiny and put on OA...which I will but I figured since the above didn't work as planned maybe I should inform you before continuing with it?
Does it look like I missed anything? Another combo fix?
Also a little curious why you had me open up notepad from the run in the start menu and not in accessories?
I think that's everything. Thanks again PC.
Regards,
Arc

Hi,
We are going to have to do some more work. I think that W2K may not recognize the SC command which I was using to kill AVG. I'll do some alternative.
The rootkit is not gone yet. I now know where it is hiding, and it is in your MBR (Master Boot Record). There have been a few cases of these nasties reported, and I will need to fix the MBR in order to actually rid the system of the rootkit. To see it, look at the Disk Sectors Report, and you will see that sectors 32 and 63 are where the rootkit is hiding.
I will be back to you with later today with instructions on how to fix the MBR, and kill NDMONPROTO using GMER. I have a little research to do to make sure I have the latest info on these MBR rootkits. _________________ Don't read? Can't learn!

Hi,
One question for you. Do you have your W2K installer CD? _________________ Don't read? Can't learn!

PC:
It should be laying around somewhere.
Cool research.
So I'll wait on the OA install then?
About the files you wanted uploaded as I said I couldn't find them...are they just not there or is there another way for me to get them to you? Thanks.

Hi,
Yeah, find that CD, and you can uninstall Tiny and install OA. I should be back to you with instructions in an hour or so. _________________ Don't read? Can't learn!

Hi,
I sent off a PM to nosirrah to see if he had any way to analyze this critter if I capture the current MBR before fixing it. If there is some way to do that, I will want to try it first before the fix.
AFAIK, this is the first time we have seen a W2K MBR rootkit here at CC. _________________ Don't read? Can't learn!

Hi,
Ready for some more fun? Please download this program:
http://www.snapfiles.com/screenshots/hdhacker.htm
It's safe, in fact that site is the best freeware and shareware site around, and everything is screened for malware before being posted there. The site is very up and up.
There is no installer, simply create a new folder in Program Files named HDHacker and unzip the download there.
- Run HDHacker.
- In the first section "Drive to operate" click on "Physical Drive (MBR)".
- In the second section click on "First Sector (MBR)".
- Now click on "Read sector from Disk", then after the sector is read and the funny looking stuff is shown in the upper window, click on "Save sector to File" and just let the program save the file to its' default, the folder you unzipped it to. Name the file OldInfected.dat.
After we fix the MBR, we are going to do the same thing to capture a clean version of the MBR. By comparing the two we can find the rootkit, and then some of the analysts will try to figure out how to analyze it. As far as I know, this is the first time we have had an opportunity to capture one of these in the wild.
Now, let's fix your system's MBR. This is really pretty simple. First, I assume you have found your W2K installer CD. If so, here we go:
- Make sure your bios is set so that the optical drive is set higher than your hard drive in the boot sequence. We need to boot from the W2K installer CD.
- Now boot from the CD, and you will need to tap any key when the message "Tap any key to boot from the CD ..." appears on your screen.
- After loading a whole bunch of drivers, you will be offered a choice to install Windows or to repair your installation using the Recovery Console by tapping "R". That's what you want, so tap "R" and you should continue to boot into what looks like a DOS window. All black with a command prompt on the left side (>).
- Type the following command at the command prompt:
fixmbr
and tap <Enter>.
- When the command prompt (>) returns, reboot your system into normal Windows. Remember to remove the W2K installer CD before you reboot so you won't reboot into the installer again.
- That should have replaced your MBR with a factory fresh new version, free of any rootkit.
- Now rerun GMER following the same instructions as before. Post the log for me and I will give you further instructions from that point.

LOL, it's not as hard as it looks. Pretty simple actually. I really appreciate your willingness to help here with capturing this critter. _________________ Don't read? Can't learn!
