I'm running Windows XP and Norton IS2007 with everything enabled.
My PC has started to run very slowly but the problem is intermittent; sometimes it's fine. It affects all processes. When I look in the Task Manager the lucoms~1.exe is consuming 99% of the CPU at these times. This application is apparently related to Norton Live Update, according to notice boards I've checked. I opened Norton and tried to disable the live update option to see if it would clear the problem, and I cannot even seem to turn live update off.
Any suggestions?

How long do these episodes last. I get the same thing but for me there are multiple instances of lucoms.exe running. this usually happens when I first connect to the internet. this lasts about 5 minutes but not 90 percent though. what about this other program appsvc32.exe does it use a lot of memory at the same time

The episode length is unpredictable. For the past 24 hrs or so it's been 'all the time'. It might speed up tomorrow and then slow down again. Appsvc32.exe is showing no activity.

Easy fix: Update [for free] to NIS 2008. It's even lighter than the 2007 versions.

Well, great. But free? Where do you get it for free?

Download the trial version from this page. Be sure to keep your Symantec key available to actvate the new install. The subscription to the 2008 product will transfer from the 2007 install.
Be SURE to completely un-install all 2007 products including Live Update before the new install.
When you are prompted about the trial you have the option to enter your old key and validate the install at that time.

Let me know if you need any further help

Best install advice: Downstall your 2008 upgrade from this section:
Free TrialwareTry our products for 15 days before you buy.
Norton 360
Norton Confidential
Norton SystemWorks Standard Edition
Norton SystemWorks Premier Edition
Norton Ghost 12.0

Makes for a much cleaner install that you control.

I have the same LUCOMS~1.exe slow computer problem. And while I appreciate Amy's solution - I am perplexed that I have to 're-up' for another year. Frankly I have been very unimpressed that my current Norton software seems to be slowing my computer down. Why do I have to add another year (at another $50) to fix the problem! Mad

If your subscription is still good for a 2006 or 2007 product the upgrade to 2008 versions would be at no cost to you.

What year and product is currently installed ???

To completely turn of Automatic LiveUpdate (ALU), open your Control Panel, and click on the Symantec LiveUpdate icon (you may need to switch to the "Classic View" in the Control Panel). The LiveUpdate Configuration dialog will open up, and then click on the Automatic LiveUpdate tab. Uncheck the "Use Automatic LiveUpdate" option, and click OK.

This will completely turn off Automatic LiveUpdate for *all* Norton products on your system. If you launch NIS 2007 and turn off Automatic LiveUpdate via the NIS Settings UI, you are only turning off ALU for NIS. Unfortunately, there are other internal Norton components that ignore this setting due to security update concerns. But using the Control Panel method above will turn off ALU completely for all Norton products.

Hope this helps -- but remember, Automatic LiveUpdate is now turned off completely, so it is now your responsibility to keep the Norton product(s) up to date by running LiveUpdate regularly (preferably daily to get Definition updates, but shouldn't be any longer than weekly).

Using the advice on this forum, we've just uninstalled an old Norton programme that was on our computer.

The difference is unbelievable!! Quieter, faster, more efficient!!

Thankyou, folks. A big *ups* to you all!

Cheers!
