And on top of that...

Before I came here and read the directions, I had HijackThis correct everything on the first run (before even the first one I posted). It created a back up folder. Is there some way to reinstall what was taken off? My computer is running faster, but there are things missing.

Thanks.

HijackThis is not to be used like an automatic scanner. It's a Registry editor listing both the good and the bad, which is why you need an expert to interpret the results. By having it "fix" everything you can seriously hose your computer.

But not to worry just follow these instructions:

Open HijackThis, click Do a system scan only. Next, click the Config button. On that page, under configuration, click Backups. Inside there will be a list of everything that you have removed. Simply put a checkmark next to the item you want restored, and click the Restore button. HijackThis will then move the item from its backup folder back to the way it found it.

Reboot or restart your computer.

Now do a scan and save a logfile. Post the new log here. Thanks.

Hello rlang,

I'll be your helper while we remove malwares. Please follow my directions and do not make changes to the system nor run any tools on your own, without checking with me first.
Let's get started and do some basics. Wink

1. Set Windows to show all files and all folders.

5. Please download & save Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Here or Here

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in a new reply as soon as it has finished.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

>
6. Download Deckard's System Scanner: http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe
Close all applications and windows.

Double-click on dss.exe to run the application; follow the prompts.

When the scan is completed, a text file named Main.txt will open. Please save this file, then close Notepad.

The folder C:\Deckard also will open. This folder will contain another text file named Extra.txt. Please save this file to your desktop, too, then exit Notepad.
Note: Your firewall may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

I'll also need the MBAM report, and the the contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt (from above).
Be sure to do a Preview prior to pressing Submit because all reports may not fit into 1 single reply. You'll likely have to do more than 1 reply.

This will get us started on seeing what malware may be on this system.
There will be more to do after these preliminary steps.

Confirm for me that you have done all the steps I listed just before the MBAM step. I need to know that.

I am awaiting the Deckard scan report, as that will really have lots of useful information about different aspects of this system.

Also, do this:
Please download RogueRemover & save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on rr-free-setup.exe to install in C:\Program Files\RogueRemover.
  • Navigate to the folder and double click on the file named RogueRemover.exe or use the icon that was created on your desktop.
  • Once the program runs, select Check for Updates.
  • When prompted, select Check for Updates.
  • If prompted again, click Download to receive the latest updates.
  • When completed, close the update window.
  • Finally, select Scan and the program will walk you through the remaining steps.
Next, Scan the system at Kaspersky.

Kapersky Online Scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Arrow Attention: Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 may not run successfully while another antivirus program is running. If you have Anti-Virus software installed, please temporarily disable your AV protection before running the Kaspersky Online Scanner. Reenable it after the scan is finished.

During this run, make sure your browser does not block popup windows. Have patience while some screens populate.

1) Click the Kapersky Online Scanner button. You'll see a popup window.
2) Accept the agreement
3) Accept the installation of the required ActiveX object ( XP SP2-SP3 will show this in the Information Bar )
4) For XP SP2-SP3, click the Install button when prompted
5) The necessary files will be downloaded and installed. Please have plenty of patience.
6) After Kaspersky AntiVirus Database is updated, look at the Scan box.
7) Click the My Computer line
8 ) Be infinetely patient, the scan is comprehensive and, unlike other online antivirus scanners, will detect all malwares

9) When the scan is completed there will be an option to Save report as a .txt file. Click that button. Copy and paste the report into your reply.
Re-enable your antivirus program.
Kapersky Online Scanner can be uninstalled later on from Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, if desired.

Run a new HijackThis Scan & Save.

Post back with copies of the HJT report, and the Kaspersky.txt report.
How is your system now Question

Do not be alarmed if Kaspersky tags items that are already in quarantine by other programs or if in system restore points.
Kaspersky is a report only and does not remove files.

What about Rogue Remover? Did it find anything?

Make sure your SpySweeper is up to date, then do a full scan of your system. Let me know what it finds, if anything.

Then start HijackThis. Do a Scan and Save. Post the new HijackThis along with the SpySweeper report.
