A virus knocked it out awhile ago, but my computer is currently free of viruses ( I get the hacker/defender one some times, but I can get rid of it fast). The install always fails at the same place
C:\config.msi\f48aa.rbf
Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks. BTW, McAffe installation also fails.

MSI files are the Microsoft Installer files. You can read about them here.

I had similar problems when my neighbor had Topsearcher in his machine. I could not install McAfee or Norton nor could I go to their websites. Windows updates were not allowed either. If the additional problems exist on your computer, I would suggest you visit the hijackthis forum and read some of the posts and see if you might have been hijacked. Otherwise list the level and product name of the Symantec install plus anyother information that will be helpful.

It's Norton Antivirus 2004 wont install. BTW, I can install other AV programs, but they all have different problem (for example, Panda Antivirus causes my video card to crash).

i did the stuff it mentioned, I went into my temp and got rid of everything, then I went into msconfig and made my XP only do the bootup it requested, then I restarted. Started to install Norton and it failed in the same place.
The way Norton got the way it was is that I used to have it installed, but I got a virus that was too new for Norton to kill. The virus deactivated Norton (as well as McAffe), but I was able to use a smaller Antivirus that the new virus didn't detect (Panda Antivirus). After I got rid of the virus and did at least a dozen different complete computer scans from multiple online virus scanning services ( the symantec one included), I went to reinstall Norton and I got the same error I've been having for awhile.

Have you tried emailing Norton Support? I have used them before and it worked good for me. By tracking through free support on line I came across this form which can be submitted to Symantec Tech Support. I hope this helps.
https://support.ece.com/forms/symantec/contactsymantec.asp
List product Norton AntiVirus
List year 2003
click continue: and on the next window click oninstallation entry
in the Top support and Contact box. When the next window appears click on the Contact tab which now a window with a computer console appears for free online support. Click on the computer monitor and the form appears to send to Symantec.
