I'm new to this so bear with me if I make any mistakes
This may be of use to someone
My computer recently started hanging for about two minutes at start up
Event viewer reported a problem with avg6
Solution was to uninstall then download then install in safe mode
The uninstall left loads of files behind so clean them out I used regcleaner
Hope this is helpful

So, you got it installed again in safemode but it's still hanging at startup?
How many programs do you have loading at startup? If there are many, your system may not have the resources to load AVG too.
I would like to see a snapshot of your running apps so post a HijackThis log here.
Please follow these directions:
From Computer Cops get the Direct-Download of HijackThis. It's zipped. Please download this, even if you have HijackThis, as it is the most up-to-date HijackThis version available.
Save it to your download folder first.
Unzip the download (using a piece of software like Winzip). Create a folder in My Documents and unzip HijackThis into the new folder and run it from there. Do not run HijackThis from your desktop or a Temp folder as these do not allow HijackThis to save the changes it makes.
Doubleclick on HijackThis.exe from the unzipped archive and press the "Scan" button.
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press this button, and save the log to the same folder as HijackThis.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Copy and paste the contents of your entire HijackThis log into your post.
Open the Log with Wordpad/Notepad (for example), Press Ctrl + A to highlight all, then Press Ctrl + C to copy it. To put it in your post, position the cursor on the page and press Ctrl + V.
Thanks. _________________

Hi prince
that's what I thought so I uninstalled symantec but still got the same problem. As I said, reinstalling avg in safe mode seems to have cured the problem.
However I will follow your advice and stop symantec running at startup.
Thanks for your help it is much appreciated.
