Oct. 12, 2003. On my home computer, Compaq Presario 5717 tabletop with Windows 98 and 96 MB memory, I am having a problem trying to download Windows updates from Microsoft.
When I select the "install" switch, the download progress window comes up as it should. It is entitled, "Windows Update - Web Page Dialog". However instead of starting from zero, it indicate that the patches have already been downloaded (i.e., the "download progress" bar indicates 100% downloaded and shows 452 KB/452 KB).
But even tho the slidebar indicate 100% downloaded, the line below the bar says, "Download time remaining: 1 hour 14 minutes".
Also the "Install Progress" slidebar never moves. It remains showing zero progress even after several hours.
The problem may have arisen from an earlier attempt to update Windows. This attempt was interrupted by popups and other AOL problems. The ISP crashed and interrupted the download of the updates. I have not been able to resume or restart it since then.
As with every other problem involving the normal usage of Microsoft products which I have ever presented to Microsoft, they blew this one off too.
