I just recently ordered verizon dsl and ever since then i have had a headache. My dial up connection was only 26.5 kbps so i odered dsl. One of the many problems is that my dsl seems to run slower than the dial up service. I'm on a Dell dimension 8200 with pentium 4 2 ghz processer and 256 ram running Win XP sp 1. I am connected through the dsl modem they provided which is a westell model 2200 (did not come with any manual or info) through the LAN connection which says "LAC speed: 100.0 mbps" and it is enabled. It started out that it would sometimes connect and i would have expected speeds then stop working and a verizon online updates window would pop up and ask for user name and pass and then same for a router. I call verizon and they said it was part of verizon online support and i can remove the program. I did and the problem seemed to go away for a while. I have spent 2 days reading the forums here and doing everything that i could find even remotely similar to my problem and it is still a problem. i started out with cleaning the temp files and scanning with Panda then dling trojan hunter, spybot(new version), ewido, highjackthis, and spyware doctor. Got the updates and ran the scans several times to make sure i had no viruses/trojans/worms on my system. Then dled kerio firewall and installed it. I made sure the system restore was off so i didnt restore a virus. the problem occurs wether the firewall is on or off. Kerio firewall keeps getting incoming connection alert trying to connect to port 135 owned by 'generic host process for Win32 services' on your computer Details c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe (is this spyware? should i keep denying it? or should i let it through?) i exhausted all i can think of or find on these forums so any help would be appreciated. Thanks alot for taking the time to read this. now i will go take some asprin. Should i post a HiJack this report?

Are you using anytype of Norton's software...anti virus, internet security, or firewall or system works on your system at all???

Please post a reply.

I have seen this error in my past experiences associated with these programs.

Do not by anymeans disable them yet.

I do have Norton AntiVirus 2002 which came with the system and i keep it updated. The only firewall that i did have until yesterday was just the inadiquate XP firewall which i turn off and on to test wether it was that slowing the connection and it did not have any effect.

Sorry to take so long in your response....major puter problems over here that are frustrating me.

SVCHost.exe is a dll file the runs many different modules and at different instances.

Most likely, your firewall is stopping one of the internal activities that Windows runs from contacting the internet. There is a site which may help you here;
http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=security&message.id=7747
Follow the link for more information. Chances are you don't need these services but to make sure, I would only disable one at a time and test.

I also have a link to the Westell site which has documentation, diagnostics and other helpful things that you should download here; http://www.westell.com/pages/index.jsp

As for the connection speed, I'm confused about the program that Verizon told you to turn off. It sounds like it killed your connection then required you to log in again. Is this correct?
Please explain to me how you are connected to the internet now. Hardware and software.
BTW, did Verizon test your phone line to make sure that you would get acceptable speeds for both download and upload?
