|
|
I want to run my wireless network through my home desktop. All information I've seen so far shows the schematics of my cable running into the router first. I'm under the impression that I need a PCI card that will allow me to network out from my desktop to create the wireless network but haven't found the hardware to support, such as an ethernet adapter with two ports, one for in, one for out. So what I have is cable to cable modem, cable modem to desktop via ethernet adapter. Do I just buy another ethernet adapter, hook it up for networking, attach a wireless internet router to it and viola? Or am I missing something? Are there other questions I need to ask or answer to figure this out? Sure do appreciate the help, in advance of course. _________________ Donnie

You can certainly set it up that way if that is really what you want to do. The two key pieces will be the addition of a second NIC (one to the cable and one to the WAN port of the router) and implementing a service under Windows called Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). I have done that in the past with a dial up connection and it seems to work well enough. _________________

Just to clarify...
NIC=Network Interface Card? I.E. the ethernet adapter?
When you say one to the cable, you mean input?
One to WAN port is output?
So I buy another NIC and install. Sounds easy enough. Unless there's special NIC's for output, which I don't believe they are made that way. They are just the interface. What I do with them, via software setup, after installation is what makes them input/output, i.e. network capable/internet sharing. I sure do appreciate the assistance Oldfrog. I kind of figured I knew what I was doing but it helps to ask questions just to ease my mind that I'm headed in the right direction. For posterity sake, once I get it all set up, I will reply again and let everyone know how it went. _________________ Donnie

Well, it's done. I purchased a Belkin 802.11g Wireless DSL/Cable Gateway Router, a NIC card, installed all and it didn't work. Searched the Belkin and other network forums to no avail. Eventually I called the support line and found that I couldn't set up this wireless router through the computer. Had to have the cable run through the router first. Or, at least the support person didn't know how to do it. But I'm happy to say that I am running wireless through my house now. Sorry I don't have more information for the particular set-up I wanted. _________________ Donnie
