My PC is hardwired through a firewalled SMC Networks Barricade 52 meg wireless router to a speedstream external DSL modem

I got a new Toshiba P10-610, and began loading programs and configuring it. It automatically recognized the router and established a wireless connection.

I downloaded MS Service pack 2 and continued using the connection.

When I booted the laptop later, it didn't connect. I brought up the connections screen and it said the connection was disconnected. Nothing had touched or interfered with the modem or router during this time. The computer recognized a couple of unsecured connections, apparently in the neighborhood, but obviously not a good way to go.

The connections screen on the PC registers as "connected" (obviously, or I wouldn't be posting this on the forum.

So --- can anyone advise me? Is it something in SP2 that is causing this.?

Start by checking a couple of things. Do a reboot to the computer first. Then click on Start, run and type in 'cmd', this will bring you to the ms-dos prompt. When you reach the prompt type in 'ipconfig' and then take note of 1. How many ethernet adapters it displays and 2. The IP address, subnet mask and default gateway of each. Next what you'll want to do is type in 'ping <ip address of wireless connection>' this will tell you whether or not you can communicate with your wireless router and then you can determine if it is a problem with the router itself or with the dsl modem. If you recieve 4 pings your networking to the wireless router is ok. Next type 'ping www.cnn.com' and see if you can ping an external website. Start with that and post the results here. Also, have you had the dsl modem for awhile or is this something new that you've just installed as well?

I'm sorry in my last post I said you should type in 'ping' but what you should actually type in is 'ping <ip address of your default gateway>' sorry.

Thanks for the advice.

In the meantime, I did a system restore to the last event before downloading SP2, and the connection was re-enabled.
Now I have the computer in for a repair of the DVD burner, and they are going to run a full diagnostic.

I will keep your reply handy in case the problem reappears when I get the computer back.
