|

K, this has been doing my head now for 2 days and I finally found a solution thx to the below mentioned post. It only takes a minute or 2 tops.
As mentioned in post /postitle77058-0-0-.html, NAV2k5 doesnt like to be moved from the start/all programs into other folds. Solution given in that post was to move it back to start/all programs which solves this problem.
Another solution for the people that do want to place it in a different place in the start menu would be to go to run. Run regedit. Then go to edit - Find or just press ctrl+f. The search for either
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\
or
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton AntiVirus\
Depending on your installation. If you installed NAV with systemworks use the first one, if you just installed NAV the use the second one.
Then once it starts searching the first one it will find you'll need to rename the entry on the right side to wherever you want to place the NAV in the start menu.
For the second one you will get some weird alphanumeric value. Open the value on the right side and edit the value data to wherever you want to place the NAV in the start menu.
The the last one it will find you just open the short cut value on the right side and change the value data once again to the folder where you want NAV to be in your start menu.
That´s all, it worked for me, hope it will work for you 2.

This problem occurs if you have changed the default location for the Norton AntiVirus shortcuts in the Windows Start Menu. Unfortunately, Symantec has become as arrogant as Microsoft as they "expect" all users will naturally and blindly adhere to "their standards". In this case, Symantec's solution to this bug is simply "do it their way".
See HERE for Symantec's explanation and solutions.
Their way is not acceptable to me. I personally do not like all my programs to be stacked up under All Programs in the Start Menu. I use subfolders to group like applications together, thereby keeping my Start Menu "tidy". For example, I have subfolders called Utilities, Internet Stuff, and Palm Stuff, among others. I moved my Norton 2005 folder and its shortcuts under "Utilities".
There is an easy solution to this if you are comfortable editing the Registry. There are also 2 workarounds that may work fine for you. If you don't feel comfortable editing the Registry, then I recommend you choose one of these 2 options. (1) Norton's way - Move the shortcuts back to their original location in your Start Menu. See the link above to determine where that should be. It is based on whether your NAV2005 came packaged as stand-alone, with NIS, or with SystemWorks. Instructions are included to move, or recreate the shortcuts where they want them.
(2) Open the Norton AntiVirus Options menu and select Miscellaneous and uncheck Enable Office Plug-in. This, of course, disables NAV2005's ability to scan Office documents when you open them - a key feature of an AV program, IMO. The hazard with disabling this feature is NAV2005 will not automatically scan Office documents you download, copy from another computer, or media (floppy, CD) or save off as an attachment. You will have to remember to scan the file manually. To fix this problem the right way, that is permanently (or until a future update screws it up again) you must edit the Registry.
WARNING Using a Registry editor incorrectly can cause immediate irreparable damage to the operating system that may require a complete re-install to correct. It is recommended you backup your Registry before making any changes to it. Also, creating a new "Restore Point" is advisable. Backing up the Registry in XP-Go to Start, Run and enter regedit in the text field, and Click OK
-In the left panel, click My Computer once to highlight
-Click File, Export...
-In the Export Registry File window, click on the Desktop icon on the left side
-In the File name: text field enter a file name, like NAV2005 and click Save.
-Click File, Exit to close the Registry Editor
(NOTE: To restore the registry, double-click the Registry file you that you saved, then click Yes.)
To create a Restore Point in XP:-Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore
-In the Welcome to System Restore window, select the Create a restore point radio button and click Next >
-Follow the prompts Now for the nitty gritty!
Get the current location of your shortcuts-Right-click on Start and click on Explore All Users
-In the Right Panel, click on Programs and drill down into your Norton Antivirus folder
-Note the address - TIP - click View, Toolbars, and check Address Bar if not already checked
-Right Click once in the Address Bar to highlight the entire address, then click Copy to put the correct location in the Clipboard's memory
-Click File, Exit to close the window
Edit the Registry (The dangerous part!)-Open RegEdit (if still open from above, skip this step) Go to Start, Run and enter regedit in the text field
-Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Norton Antivirus
-Double Click on the String Value “ShortcutPath"
-In the Edit String pop-up window, the Value Data field should be highlighted, Right-Click in the highlighted field and Click Paste to replace the location with the correct location saved in your clipboard (Note: If not highlighted, just delete the text in the field and paste in the new address)
-Click OK
-Click File, Exit to exit RegEdit That's it! Now when you click on Word or another Office application, Norton should not complain.

Thanks for the cure. I'm one of those that just clicked my way through the installation of NAV 2005 and accepted all the defaults so I wonder why I'm getting the error message at boot up and when opening MSWord.<BR>I think I'll try your cure anyway...<BR>Thanks for your time and cures,<P>

You did not have any option to change this in the setup. So, if after the install, you moved the icons in your Start Menu to some place that is acceptible to YOU, then you get the error.
Note the first line of my text - It says the problem occurs "if" you changed the locations.
If you have not touched your icons in your start menu, and you are having the problem, then my solution does not affect you and I recommend you NOT mess with the Registry then.

Did you fellas realise the fix doesn't work when the NAV folder is outside the Program group?
I tend to organise my Menus outside the Programs group, but still under the Start Menu.
In any case, it's utterly stupid for Symantec to have some sort of hidden routines in place without even acknowledging it, documenting it, or at least offering other measures to prevent this from happening.

Outside the Programs group? I don't see what you mean. Please explain. Start by indicating what OS you are talking about.
The point is, no matter where you moved the "shortcuts" for those programs, if you edit the Registry to indicate the "folder" where those shortcuts are really located, it works!

It doesn't always work I'm afraid. I'm not placing my shortcuts under Programs either which maybe the cause of it or it's maybe due to the fact that I'm under a domain.
(e.g. "C:\Documents and Settings\dorothea.titan\Start Menu\PC software\Applications\Norton SystemWorks 2005\")
Any thoughts on this would be very much appreciated guys - thanx!!!

Ptooey and Castlez, and everyone else too!
First, Ptooey - Sorry - I understand where you mean now. You folks are talking about the area above the dividing line in the "All Programs" sub-menu of the Start Menu, right?
As a test, I created a folder under C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\Start Menu\ called "TestFolder" and I moved my Norton AV folder from below the line to inside TestFolder. I then edited my registry to indicate:
C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\Start Menu\TESTFOLDER\Norton AntiVirus
... and rebooted.
It worked! But, when I logged into my system under my wife's account, it did NOT work.
So then I created a folder called AllUsersTestFolder under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\ and moved my Norton AV folder to there, edited my registry to indicate:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\AllUsersTestFolder\Norton AntiVirus
... and rebooted. Then it worked for me and it worked for my wife.
So, all I can say is that it works on as long as you have permissions to access that folder and the correct folder is indicated.
Note to Castlez where you | wrote: | | C:\Documents and Settings\dorothea.titan\Start Menu\PC software\Applications\Norton SystemWorks 2005\ |
If that is what your registry says then based on what I have seen, that is not correct. You did not drill down far enough and, as my instructions said, drill down into your Norton Antivirus folder. Your registry entry must indicate the location of the Norton AV shortcuts, not the locations of the Norton AV folder! In other words, edit your registry to say this:
C:\Documents and Settings\dorothea.titan\Start Menu\PC software\Applications\Norton SystemWorks 2005\Norton AntiVirus
Norton needs to know where the shortcuts are, not where the folder is. Perhaps I needed to emphasis that more in my original posts.
So we need to be certain that:(1) Either move the shortcuts under "All Users" or that everyone has correct permissions to access necessary folders, and
(2) The registry entry indicates the location of Norton AV's shortcuts, and does not stop short at Norton AntiVirus' "parent" folder.
Give that a try and let me know.
Thanks,

Prior to posting this, I had tried both actually. That is, going a level down deeper. It still does not work in my case.
Maybe due to the domain part as I said? I dunno - but it is frustrating.
Thanks for your quick reply though - appreciated.

I found an easier fix (sorry if someone mentioned this already and I missed it)--just put a copy of the Norton AntiVirus folder back in the main Programs folder of your Start menu, and hide it and its files. (Right click->Properties->Hidden). It will no longer show up in the Start menu.
You can put another, non-hidden copy wherever you wanted it in the first place.
Kludgy, but saves editing the registry...
