Hi All,
I just downloaded and installed
AVPE
Main Program v6 28.00.00, 31.08.2004
Search Engine 28.0.3, 28.9.2004
Virus Definition File v28.0.5, 6. 10. 2004
AV Rep DLL 28.00.03, 5. 10.2004
[OS Win98SE
Running ZoneAlarmPro version 5.1.033.000
True Vector security engine version 5.1.033.000
driver version 5.1.033.000
Running AVG but I do not run AVG & AVPE at the same time. I want to use AVPE for weekly, in depth scans while keeping AVG for daily protection]
Whenever I try to manually download updates in AVPE I keep getting error messages saying - unable to connect to the server, please change your connection option (words to that effect).
The error description is-
While downloading the new files the following error occured:
http://dl3.avgate.net
error opening the internet file!
a connection with the server could not be established
I used the test button (found under Options, Configuration, Internet Updates) to try all three connection options there - and all gave the same errors saying to change the connection!
I enabled Automatic Internet Updater - but am not sure if it is working or not since I don't have the program enabled to run all the time.
The updater was 'allowed' access in Zone Alarm's firewall.
I deleted it from the list and let Zone Alarm re-learn to allow this program to access the internet. I also, took the risk and shut down ZoneAlarm to try to update AVPE and it still gave the same errors. So I don't think it's the firewall that is the problem!
Any help would really be appreciated!!

BTW, I've searched the forums on AVPE's website -- and found no solutions there.
I'm trying to fix the problem by uninstalling - removing all registry entries -- performing a clean boot and reinstalling AVPE. I'll then start the internet updater from the Main Program and see if that works. I'll post results later....
but,
in the meantime, if anyone has found a resolution to this problem (which seems to be common from all that I've read!!!!) please post here and let me know how to fix this.
Oh - I'm using dial-up modem connection. If it makes any difference.

Howdy,
Make sure you let ZA know that it is ok to connect. Other than that right now is a very busy time for the servers as everyone is trying to update right now. _________________ "Anyone who considers protocol unimportant has never dealt with a cat."

Hey, Mr Rockford,
Thanks, but ....
I already enabled internet updater in Zone Alarm.
When that didn't work initially --- I deleted the updater program from the programs list in ZA.
Then I let ZA 're-learn'.
(this was a suggestion I saw somewhere)
(So, the next time updater tried time to connect I got an alert from ZA and I click 'allow' again.)
It is DEFINITELY enabled in ZA.
HO hum....
I reallly reallly like this program......and I would reallllllly like to be able to get the updater to work.
My fingers are crossed that someone has a solution....
Maybe it's the server that's the problem..........?

Just a quick update.
I uninstalled AVPE.
I ended up formatting my computer.
When I got everything installed/loaded again (OS, and other software) --- including AVPE. I made sure the first time I tried to update AVPE - that I updated from the MAIN program window.
I don't know if this is why it was successful or not - but this was recommended on the AVPE forums.
Anyway, it worked. So, just thought I'd post it here.
