It is in the Start Menu where, if those folders were moved, it does not work. Your reponse indicates you were looking in the directory tree, unless I mis-understood you.

Did you try the link to Symantec's solution as listed in my original post on this on the first page, which Prince_S provides again for you?

I did this.

1) Moved the "Norton Antivirus" directory back under Start->Programs

2) Copied the "Norton Antivirus" directory with all its shortcuts from /Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu/Programs to /Documents and Settings/<MY_ACCOUNT>/Start Menu/Programs/<WHERE I WANT IT TO BE>

3) Set the /Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu/Programs/Norton Antivirus directory to hidden

I did this cos the registry edit simply did not work for me at all, no matter how I edited it. So long as the "shortcutpath" didn't point to /Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu/Programs/Norton Antivirus, it refused to work.

This is for those who couldn't get it to work.

The only snag is that every user has to make the copy of the directory for themselves if they want it in their start menu in the 1st place. Good thing I only have like 1 user (ME!) on this machine Razz

Thanks for the efforts from Bill and the others - it helped me figure out how to do the above for myself.

- Mark

Windows was designed with a start menu that could be customized to suit the customers needs, desires, and requirements. For Symantec to decide that they know best how the customers AV 2005 shortcuts should be placed is a little pompous on their part. I have already had three people that customize their start menus call me about this.

I have sent Symantec an email letting them know that their decision to make us put their shortcut where they want it, ( or have to redo the registry ) is a bad one. I included the fact that I will no longer be recommending their Anti-Virus software to my customers until they fix this issue.

If you feel strongly about this as I do, you might want to send a note to their customer service department expressing your feelings on this issue.

Oboe - Welcome to CastleCops. As you can tell from my earlier post in this thread, Symantec's arrogance is something I have an issue with too.

I too have given them a piece of my mind on this - pointing out the same things as you. Note that they do not even mention the registry fix which I pointed out to them as further evidence of their lack of consideration for their customers.

However, don't be surprised if you don't hear anything from them, other than a "canned" response to their page that says to move the icons back.

Still, I too recommend everyone write and complain - just do so in a polite professional matter and explain as Oboe has done, why you don't like it and that you can no longer recommend their product. Someone reads it.

If you really want to be heard, send a regular letter to one of the people listed on the Symantec Board of Directors. Worth a try! Wink

Symantec Corporation
20300 Stevens Creek Boulevard
Cupertino, CA 95014
United States of America

Or, you can use one of the options available here at Symantec Feedback Page

Best regards

Edit: Here is the link for returns: http://www.symantec.com/custserv/returns.html

Hi,

I jumped with joy when I saw your post, as this has been annoying me for a while - but it doesn't seem to help me!

I get the error on startup as well as when opening any MSOffice stuff.

I've edited the registry to say "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton SystemWorks Premier 2005\Norton AntiVirus\", which is definitely the right folder (I even copied and pasted it into explorer to check). I've also rebooted.

However, the problem still remains, and when I looked at the application event log (eventvwr.exe) the error still says it can't find the OLD directory ("The resource 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\' does not exist.
"). I've gone back into regedit many times to check that my edited version is there, so is there anywhere else it's getting this old directory string from?

Any ideas? Cheers guys, hopefully someone's still around from this post Smile

After following all the steps Bill_Bright listed in his detailed message on how to fix this problem using RegEdit the problem persisted on one of my PCs.

For the benefit of anyone else who may run into that, the solution for me was to follow all of Bill's steps, then...
Go into the NAV2005 program
UN-check the "Enable Office Plug-in" box (on Miscellaneous tab)
Exit NAV
Start Word (it started normally this time)
Exit Word
Go back into the NAV2005 program
RE-check the "Enable Office Plug-in" box

After that the problem was gone.

Peter
