Hello:
I have about reached the end of my rope on setting up a home network, and I could sure use some wisdom and advice. Here are the particulars:
I have a new laptop running Windows XP Home SP2, that is normally docked in a port replicator. The replicator is hardwired to a Linksys Broadband-G wireless router.
I also have a desktop computer hardwired to the router. The desktop is running Windows 98 SE.
Finally I have a cable modem plugged into the router. Both computers can access the internet just fine.
The desktop (Bilbo) can "see" the shared files of the laptop (Frodo), but the laptop cannot see the desktop. The best I have achieved on the laptop is to see the name of the desktop, but when I click on it's name the error message I get back (after a long wait) is: "\\Bilbo is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."
I have checked to ensure that both computers are using the same workgroup name, including the same case.
On the laptop I have run the network wizard, but cannot entirely complete the process. When I run the network setup on the other computer it tells me that it cannot see a network card, and says to install and configure one, then run the wizard again. I know the card is there. Does XP just not recognize the model?
I am stumped. PLEASE HELP.

omg i had the same prob for 3 years just fixed it tonight, turned out my firewall(zone-alarm) was blocking the signal since it comes over TC/IP. i simply added the IP range to the trusted zone and wala! instant home network!

HILER35: I HEREBY PRONOUNCE YOU "HERO OF THE REALM"! MAY THE FORCE BE ALWAYS WITH YOU!
I did what you said and "it do what it suppoz ti do"! I had to configure the trusted zones of both computers. The laptop runs Norton Internet Security, and the desktop runs ZoneAlarm. Obviously one of them was blocking the other, but now they trust one another! Ain't love a wonderful thing!
