I have just loaded the 2004 Norton Antivirus Professional program onto my pc after installing XP professional. Everything was fine - I used the live update and it worked perfectly well and connected to the internet no
problem. I then added new "users" to the pc and the Administrator logo
disappeared. Since adding new users I cannot use live update as it keeps
telling me I do not have administrator authority! No symantec programs
will connect to the internet now either. HELP!!

Hi Brian Mabbutt,

Welcome to CastleCops Hello

Is the new user that you created has admin priveledges? If no, you really can't use LiveUpdate under restricted account. Only User Account with Administrator rights can use it.

See http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/7e7f15291a25d938882567e50048a048/ddff30e8c11384c688256a31005cf0d7?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

Try to verify the LU settings (Open LiveUpdate>Options) or try to download the new version of LU if you don't have the latest from http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html
Install on top of existing version. Run LU again to see if it will work now.

If no luck, I suggest that re-install the program.

I have downloaded the LU update to no avail. Also I have tried deleting the program from add/remove and it wont let me - again because it tells me I do not have the authority to!!! I am at a loss as to what to do other than format my hard drive yet again!!!

Try removing it using the manual method. Steps to do that is in http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/5e19e84a28547fe188256d4e006aaa95/dfac9bfeeb7918f288256e35005cd80d?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

Tried manually removing it but it did not work. Luckily I backed everything up because it messed up my system and I had to use system recovry.
Any more ideas?

It can't remove automatically and manually? Sad
Did you try removing it in Safe mode?
If still no luck, try booting to the default (the hidden) Administrator user account by press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the logon screen to be able to logon to the account that is hidden by default. When done in log-in, try to uninstall the program from that account.

Donna - would it be alright if I jumped in here for a minute, if
that's alright with you? I JUST spent about 12 hours finding and
fixing all this. I came upon this thread by accident as I was
about to ask a question about something else, when I saw this.

I won't even get into the details because I've spent the last two weeks
fixing things in hex and in the registry, etc. etc., so I'll just point you
where you need to go (you can check them out yourself first if you'd like,
but take my word - I just fixed this, so I KNOW it works).

I recently upgraded from Me to XP SP2 because of a hard drive crash
and I've been restoring things on here to the way they used to be for
the last two weeks and I'm ALMOST done. This ('Symantec LU1815 -
can't connect because you need Admin Privileges') problem is just
one of scores of things I've had to fix...

Brian,

Go here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/pfdocs/2002072215205213?Open

Then:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/pfdocs/2003041613185213

Then:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/pfdocs/2000071310294913?Open
[In here, they mention an lusetup.exe File. That's for Enterprise users.
Substitute the lusetup-lt.exe File (Live Update 'Lite' -- for home users --
assuming that you're a home user)]

Also - here:
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html
[Pick the lusetup-lt.exe (1,934,880 bytes) download from 12/2/04]

Then:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/pfdocs/2003122213384913?Open
[Expand the Consumer Icon first; then expand the 'Deleting
damaged files from the LiveUpdate Downloads folder' next]

{My advice is to print ALL the relevant docs above BEFORE you do
all this, so you have everything handy for reference at your fingertips}

Log off -> Restart -> Run Live Update Again

I've wasted so much of my time with Symantec in the last 4 years,
so maybe I can help somebody else avoid a little grief...

Hi Mike,

Thanks for posting those links. No, we never and don't mind if someone jumped into a discussion like this especially if the intention is to help. It is always appreciated. It's a forum where we can all help in any means if possible.

Thanks again for posting those links which magoo1950 and other users can try.

Mike, wow, thank you, great stuff!
I have used NSW and NAV for many years and been very happy with it, except ..... what passes for Symantec "support" sucks. So it's up to me to learn my way around it, and I have.

But I have recently been struggling with Administrator privileges (see this thread):

CastleCops Link/postlite98458-.html

I am *so* glad I found this forum, and I will print out all the stuff you posted and read it carefully.

Ted

Hi pianoman1948,

I understand how you feel. I used Norton AV for quite a few years until it became a major resource hog. I then switched to freeware AV's and have not looked back. I am careful about what I use though. Currently running AVPE. Works fine.

I like to help people with their Norton/Symantec problems.

All the other CastleCops Staff members who help here are first rate too. They know their stuff. Thumbs Up

Best regards
