Hello,
I work for a small govt office that has a tiny budget, with no $ designated for IT.
When I first started four years ago, we were running Win95, had only had one computer online and no AV protection! I've brought us out of the dark ages with six new computers running XP that are networked and sharing a single slow-speed broadband connection, and we've been using NAV, which of course has to be renewed annually.
As I posted elsewhere, NAV let me down miserably on my home computer and I switched to AntiVir, and have been completely satisfied with it since that time.
Because of our small budget, I try to save us money any time I can. So (betcha thought I'd never get to the question!), would it be against the EULA for my office to use the free version of AntiVir to protect our computers?

Howdy,
To put it bluntly - yes.
From EULA
| Quote: | This free AntiVir Personal Edition is intended exclusively for private use on a single workstation. You may copy the complete program package and pass it on to others for private use only.
The free AntiVir Personal Edition may not be used for commercial or professional purposes. |
Get in contact with http://www.hbedv.com/ for more info on the Pro versions available.
P.S. Welcome to the Staff! _________________ "Anyone who considers protocol unimportant has never dealt with a cat."

Oh, bummer... The cost for the six of us would be $496.80, which is significantly more than NAV.
I'm never sure what to think when "commercial" or "professional", because government doesn't easily fall into either of those categories, hence my subject of "grey area".
P.S. Thanks!

Hi Dreaming Fox
Check out www.clamwin.com for the Clam Anti Virus which is free for all users (Including commercial) under the GNU public license.
That should solve your problem. It integrates itself with outlook so mail scanning should not be a problem. Otherwise it only comes as a scanner, ie no real time on access protection like AntiVir.
BTW, if you have the inclination to or can get somebody to write scripts, you may visit http://www.tomasello.com/software/wincron/ to learn how to write scripts to run Clam AV as a system service in windows.
Also, I have read how people have set it up on their internet gateways to scan all incoming files. That should come in handy. Please visit their forums since they would be able to guide you better.
BTW, why windows, you could have used linux. No virus problems with it. Plus, you can use a copy of open office, completely free as well as legal. And moreover, there must be loads of linux experts here who could help you set up your systems. just a random thought ....
regards

Thank you. I've visited their site and will check out their forums as time permits.
(Re why Windows? Because that's what everyone here knows. However, I intend to partition my hard drive at home and install Linux as a 2nd OS.)
