XP Pro/SP1
did a OS repair(winnt32 /unattended) root problem solved, but now when I click on Help and support in the Start pull-down, nothing happens...properties cannot be checked for that icon. I was able to add another "H and S" that works ok, just can't figure out why original does not work. Of course I now have 2 menu items for H and S with only 1 working. Any Ideas? Any and all help greatly appreciated. Seems I ran across something some time ago about missing H and S, can't recall where or what.
Thanks

Hi Memphoman, welcome.
Did you have SP1 installed prior to *repair* ?
Try this one first:
Go to Start > Run > paste helpctr -regserver enter.
Keep us posted.

I have to step out for a bit but will be back later.
If you did a repair and didn't use a slipstreamed method, you may no longer have SP1 installed.
Please visit Windows update and install all critical updates.
Does system restore give you an error if you try to start it ?

Actually, my XP has slipstreamed SP1 in it. All critical updates are installed. I have not enabled the restore function.

I see. hmmm.
I reread your original post and I see that you do have a functioning H&S shortcut that you made. So we have to assume that the service is running and that there is nothing wrong with the actual winhlp32.exe file.
Now as far as the start menu link I am not sure what has happened. I have removed it from my start menu at home, and as of right now I do not have access to an XP machine. (2k box at work)
One thing to check would be the H&S link in the control panel. Does it work ?
You can also try *removing* H&S shortcut from the Start Menu and then try adding it back. I believe this can be done via Start menu properties > customize > Advanced. (from memory..sorry)
Here is the reg key to do it manually.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
NoSMHelp REG_DWORD = 1
Have you tried any other user accounts to see if this issue is system wide ?

oops, forgot, the H and S that does not work is the one that is below Programs-Documents-Settings-Search, these I do not believe can be deleted and will not respond to rt. mouse click. The one I added is in the upper section below Windows update.

blizz51@yahoo.com - have you posted in the correct thread????
Memphoman - I appreciate that a lot of time has gone by but if you are still having problems try this. Go to C:\Windows\inf. Rightclick on pchealth.inf and choose Install. You will need your WinXP CD. Reboot and all should be well. _________________ Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience 2004-2008

A couple of other options. Although you are not getting the error dialogue, this fix has helped others with the same problem. If you havent installed SP1, check out this fix issued by Microsoft (it was included in SP1). _________________ Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience 2004-2008
