loobielou7 has reset her router as instructed to do so by Bill_bright. Her network connection problems are now solved. There was no need to mess with the firewall, and it does not seem that there was any need for her to post another HJT log.

By the way....her router probably had its DHCP assignment function turned off (there are various things that can cause this that I will not go into here). That would easily account for the problem she was having. If you run IPCONFIG and see an IP address on a Windows Computer in the '169.254' block, that is usually because the DHCP server has not been found.

I don't know if she would have gotten her problem solved if k027 had not edited my previous post concerning this issue. My advice to check the router (and not jump on the FIREWALL) was deleted out of hand by k027 because it was 'not constructive'....even though it was obvious, based on loobylou7's posted symptoms.

Because my post was deleted out of hand, I e-mailed another longtime user of this forum, and he apparently got someone's attention (though I cannot confirm this).

Thank you k027....loobylou7 might still be having problems if you had not deleted my post...because I would have let it go if you had not. She owes you more than she knows Wink

Before you delete this post, you may want to make a note of the IPCONFIG info above....and pass it on to Edit: Name removed

cheers....

Hello Denn988,

Your post was edited because it was mostly a personal attack against a specific individual whose advice you apparently did not agree with. It was clear, by the title alone, "I can't beleive the advice XXXX", that this was a personal attack. In total you criticized the individual by name four separate times in your post. Once again, in this topic, you singled out that individual. Personal attacks are a violation of the CastleCops AUP.

If you don't agree with the offered advice and have a better solution, then by all means provide it - that's what these "community" forums are about. There is no useful purpose served, however, by providing comments about advice-givers such as "XXXX ... is steering this poor woman in a direction that is probably going to cause her more problems in the long run." , "Somebody needs to take XXXX to one side and give him some good advice.", and "I hope someone will try to help XXXX give this person a little better help." Those comments certainly don't help the person with the computer problem.

The thing that I can't quite understand is if this problem was so misdiagnosed and the proposed solution was so off-the-mark, why on earth didn't you say so in the problem topic where it would have been of some use? CastleCops has over 100 forums. The probability of either the the person with the computer problem or the person you singled out for personal criticism seeing your posted information in the "Catch All-Guest"'s forum is quite low. You are a registered CastleCops member and are eligible to post in the problem topic. Even if you weren't a registered member, registration is simple - and free.

My understanding is that your prior postings have been quite helpful. I hope that your future contributions will address the computer/security issue/problem-at-hand and avoid personal criticisms.

k027,

If you consider the following statements to be personal attacks, you can go right ahead and delete them.

  • "XXXX ... is steering this poor woman in a direction that is probably going to cause her more problems in the long run."
  • "Somebody needs to take XXXX to one side and give him some good advice."
  • "I hope someone will try to help XXXX give this person a little better help."

What I don't understand is why you deleted everything, including the part about the 'Limited or no Connectivity' error being related to a failure to connect to a DHCP server. That is the part that could have helped the woman in question...yet you chose to delete it simply because you did not like the way that it was presented.

The point is that the person in question was "steering that poor woman in a direction that is probably going to cause her more problems in the long run", and who knows how long her problem would have festered if someone did not "take XXXX to one side and give him some good advice". As it turned out....Bill_bright was willing to "try to help XXXX give this person a little better help.", and because of that the woman has had her problem resolved.

You may believe that my post was not constructive, but in just a short time, my goal was accomplished. Proper help was provided to the woman, in spite of the fact that the advice I gave was misconstrued as a personal attack. The person in question is NOT an idiot, and no one said he was. If I had given the advice in question and was on the receiving end of a post that criticized me in the same way, my response would have been to to admit to my mistake and learn from it....then move on.

As to my posting to this forum to begin with......

I had just decided within the last few days to stop posting here as it has really started taking up way too much of my time. I disabled my user account and can no longer post under that account. I really was not going to post anymore, but I was checking on another thread in that forum when I just happened to catch the thread in question. I really felt bad for that poor woman, so I posted here in an effort to help her out.

I will freely admit that posting here was a mistake on my part. I won't make that mistake again.

I beg to differ. For reasons previously stated, it appears that your primary goal was to belittle a specific individual whose advice you apparently did not agree with. As a CastleCops member, you know that is not tolerated.

You don't agree with the way that your post was edited. It is each member's responsibility to make sure that his/her submittal complies with the AUP. We need to spend our time helping people with their problems, not editing posts. We really don't have the time available to go through each post, line-by-line, editing out each objectionable word and then having to rewrite the remaining text so that the post is once again coherent. Normally, if a post contains objectionable material, we delete the entire post. In any event, you certainly were free to resubmit your solution (minus the objectionable material, of course) in the problem topic.

Yes indeed. Perhaps her problem could have been solved even quicker if your solution didn't contain objectionable material and had been posted in the appropriate problem topic - she might have been able to use your information. Smile

You have made it clear that you had the best intentions in this case. However, the way to go about giving someone help is not to put down the advice of someone else who is helping in an open post. It de-edifies them and their advice and in so doing, does the same to anyone else advising in the same thread, including yourself. The person needing help is left confused when they see that and they are made to feel unconfident about the advice they are getting.

If you felt the advice was wrong, then you simply should have posted your own fix making it clear why you believed that to be the solution, but not mentioning the other person or their council at 'all'. This is the way it is 'done'. Instead, you focused in your post as much on the individual helping her and his advice as on the problem itself. This method 'works' and this is how people have their problems solved here day after day. But don't suppose for a minute that people helping always agree on the advice being given by another and sometimes it can be plain wrong. That is why we work as a team, both staff and members in problem solving, but there is a protocol which you didn't and still don't, appear to understand.

Regards

HS
