Anyone who have Norton Internet Security 2006 ONLY should not install Common Client 2005-1.0.4 update at this time. If you see this via LiveUpdate, you should decline that update for now. If you have only Norton AntiVirus 2006 OR Norton Firewall 2006 then you can install Common Client 2005-1.0.4 without any problems.

I have lots of problems after installing Common Client 2005-1.0.4 update. I know it fixed RAR vulnerability but has some bugs (not security related).

For users of Norton Internet Security 2006 ONLY OR users who have BOTH Norton AntiVirus 2006 and Norton Firewall 2006, read below:

If you have installed Common Client 2005-1.0.4 then go to Symantec Event Log Viewer and view Connections (always occurs) or view Firewall log (most occurs); then event log viewer would lock up and you cannot close or minimize event log viewer. You can shutdown the system but it will be extremely slow.

Most of the time, NMain (Control Panel for Symantec) could lock up. If this happen, you will be unable to shutdown the system and requires you to use hardware reset.

Use Common Client 2005-1.0.1 for now.

There is a workaround for Common Client 2005-1.0.4 update.

Reason: Norton AntiVirus 2006 blocked ccapp.exe from try to request Norton Firewall to update firewall rule for ccapp.exe.

If you have BOTH Norton AntiVirus and Norton Firewall 2006 installed OR just Norton Internet Security 2006 installed; follow the instruction below:

1. Once install Common Client 2005-1.0.4 update and restart the computer, IMMEDIATELY turn off Norton Internet Security 2006 or Master security switch.

2. Open Norton Control Panel and go to Firewall and click "Configure" button.

3. Go to Programs tab and locate "Symantec User Manager"; that is ccapp.exe's firewall rules. Delete that firewall rule and apply to all locations. Do this ONLY if firewall rule for ccapp.exe exists.

4. Click "Add..." and locate C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccapp.exe and accept "Automatic". Click "Ok".

5. Then you can enable the security right away and you will not encounter major problems such Norton Control Panel or Symantec Log Viewers and you can even view Connections or Firewall Category without any problems!

I found a way to workaround major bug. For moderators, please notify Symantec of this bug and this workaround.

ANOTHER UPDATE!

Symantec may have fixed the bug in Common Client 2005-1.0.4 update now, I think. Version is still 104.0.4.3 but had been updated to 104.0.4.3a that fixes the bug that causes firewall rules update to fail for ccapp.exe, ccsetmgr.exe and ccevtmgr.exe. ccL30.dll or others might be culprit. Common Client Update from LiveUpdate now delete this dll file, I think.
You can now install Common Client 2005-1.0.4 update without have to use my workaround. If you still have any problem, you have to follow my workaround.

Finally, I received an email from Symantec that Symantec now fixed major bug with Common Client 2005-1.0.4 update!!!!!

Please run the liveupdate to install fixed version of Common Client update. If you already have fixed version of Common Client update installed, the liveupdate will just says "All Products on the systems are up to date. Thank you for using LiveUpdate". If you have buggy version installed, the liveupdate will display "Common Client 2005-1.0.4 update" and you have to install this update again.

After fixed version of Common Client update are installed, you don't need to use my workaround anymore! Common Client update will properly update firewall rules upon start-up or over time if needed.
