I just updated my AVG Free then restarted my computer. I now have a file with the name "symwsc.exe" running in the background. I have never seen this running on my comp before. Was this part of the update or do I have a virus?

It is part of Symantec Anti-Virus (or Norton as it is also known):

What would cause it to run when I restarted my computer? I used Norton until late 04 but thought I had it all off my computer.

It is probably a remnant. There really isn't any way for me to tell why it should just appear now, but removing all Norton traces can be a mess at times. I have to assume that there are still Norton bits and pieces on your system. You should be able to stop this one from running by using msconfig.
