GRRR

There’s a bunch of posts about Firefox and Vista as of today, Mar 24, 2007, but this is not about the particular problems of Firefox updater and Vista…..

The PROBLEM….is Vista Firewall…..

First, Zone Alarm won’t run, as of now, on Vista…. So I scratched that idea and had already DELETED anything and everything related to Symantec…..may they rot in software hell…

Sooo since I don’t go anywhere grandma wouldn’t go and don’t click anything I don’t already know about, I’m not too worried about things…

I DISABLED all the Vista(Windows) stuff, firewall, etc. etc. it SAYS disabled….

But,

This really is so hilarious that it makes one cry….

Two items…..

a) the CLOCK wanders around orbiting through several time zones rather like Mars in retrograde and when I try to set the time….

The USER ACCOUNT CONTROL box pops up and you have to go through two more clicks to get at the clock.

The CLOCK?

USER ACCOUNT CONTROL????!!!….come on…get a clue here Vista….

Sooo…..now to Firefox…..

Firefox loaded fine…. Not a problem, but the updater kicked in today…. Nope, nada, sorry, I can’t work, because of something….says Firefox….

At the bottom of the box it says go to “User Account Control”….

NOW…PUT THIS IN PERSEPCTIVE…for non users of Zone Alarm,…..

When Firefox updater wants access, Zone Alarm pops up and asks you if you want to let it through and whether you want to remember it…… done, ‘nuff said, end of story.

Soooooo to….USER ACCOUNT CONTROOOOOLLLLL….

Close the Firefox updater window.
Go to the new Voista Logo (start) click it
Control panel
Security, subhead allow a program through Windows Firewall..
Now REMEMBER…… everything is disabled in security….

It is STILL disabled….;

But, there is a place to click to let a program in…add a program….
Click it
Get a menu of boxes some of them checked next to names
Mozilla Firefox is NOT there…
Go browse and get another set of programs
Mozilla Firefox is there.
Check it…..and close
Go back to the list Firefox is NOT there….close the whole thing…
GO BACK THROUGH THE WHOLE THING…..
Mozilla Firefox is there….checked….
Close
Open Firefox, the updatter starts…..

And STILL can’t get through….

Now, this MAY be because the Firefox folks haven’t gotten things straight yet….

OR….it may have something to do with a thread I saw about Vista “inviting” Firefox into the Windows camp….

OR….it may be that the updater will work……when I SHUT DOWN AND REBOOT…

Dunno….

But contrast it with ONE CLICK for Zone Alarm

SHEESH AND YEE GODS>>>>!!! J

Comments?

Setting up Date & Time can be quite dangerous in a company.
Also, without the UAC, it could be messed up by naughty users.
