Hello Everyone
Does anyone know how to delete mail in Windows Vista - Windows Mail without opening it first. My son taught me to do this when I don't know who the sender is. It makes sense to me and I don't want him mad at me. Wink

When viewing the Inbox, click once on the unread mail to highlight it, like the Newegg email in the picture below. Then hit the Delete key on the keyboard, or click the red X icon on the royal-blue bar above.

This puts the deleted email in the Deleted Items folder. If you'd rather completely delete the email, then hold the SHIFT key down on the keyboard while deleting the email.

You can also select multiple emails from the stack by clicking them while you're holding the CTRL key on the keyboard. To select "stacks" of emails, click one to highlight it, then hold the SHIFT key down while clicking another, and all the emails inbetween will be selected as well. You can un-select individual ones with the CTRL-click too.

Hi mechBgon
Thank you but it didn't work. When I single click on the item (left click I am assuming) it opens. Do I have something set wrong so mail opens with one click instead of two? I haven't changed any of the default settings. Also when I delete a message that's open, the next message automatically opens. Don't like that either!

I apologize, I forgot that I did some customization of my Windows Mail Embarassed If I understand correctly, the emails are displaying with the first mouse click because of the Preview Pane feature.

You can turn the Preview Pane feature on & off by clicking View > Layout. With the Preview Pane disabled, you'd get a view like the one in my first picture. Then you could use one click to highlight an email without its contents being displayed, and you'd be able to delete it without viewing it.

By contrast, here's the view with Preview Pane enabled, in which case it would go on to the next email in the stack if I deleted this one:

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!
Thank you that solved the problem. Some messages were even popping open when inbox was clicked. Works good now.
Thanks again,
Tom
