Hello guys,

One of my friends owns a HP OmniBook xe4500 LapTop with Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed. He uses a NetGear WG511T wireless networking PCMCI card. Lately, he decided to update his drivers. He thought it would be better that I followed the procedure. So, according to installation instructions, first of all I had to remove the old drivers.

That's were the problem arose. There was no Uninstallation Utility shortcut where the installation instructions stated. I had to remove the drivers and program from the Add/Remove Programs Window. The uninstallation finished extremely quickly and notified me that it was succesfull, unfortunetaly though, it was not because the program was still in the Add/Remove Programs list and the card's drivers were still intact in the Device Manager.

I was advised that I should re-install the drivers of the WG511T network card and uninstall them immedietaly after that. Still no avail, because just like in the unsolved cases of other folk, the Repair/Modify options were dim and the only option was remove, which had exactly the same result as the last procedure. A "false" success if you'd like. Sad

Presioumably, there must be some entries in the Registry, which remain so that the system sees the NetGear's installed, even though removed. If any of you have come across this problem, please advise.

This mysterious problem remains unsolved in many other forums.

Thanks in advance for your time and help,
AlexGeorge

Reinstall the old drivers again. Then follow these instructions carefully:

Open Notepad by clicking on Start, then Run, and entering the word:

Notepad

in the run box. Next tap <Enter>. Open the Notepad Format Menu and uncheck Word Wrap. Then copy and paste the following code in GREEN to Notepad:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\MSIServer]
@="Service"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SafeBoot\Network\MSIServer]
@="Service"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\MSIServer]
@="Service"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\SafeBoot\Network\MSIServer]
@="Service"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SafeBoot\Network\BITS]
@="Service"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SafeBoot\Network\WUAUSERV]
@="Service"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\SafeBoot\Network\BITS]
@="Service"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\SafeBoot\Network\WUAUSERV]
@="Service"

Next, Click on the File Menu, then Save As ... and click on the drop down menu to change the file type to All Files.

Next navigate to your desktop, and enter the file name fix.reg, and click Save.

You should now find a new file on your desktop named fix.reg. Right click on fix.reg and select Merge from the context menu. You will get a warning, agree to the merge, and then a message the file has been merged will immediately pop up.

Then reboot into Safe Mode.

Next, open your Add/Remove Control Panel and uninstall the Netgear Drivers again. Then reboot and the drivers should be really gone.

Next, install the new drivers, you can do that in Safe Mode with Networking if you wish, that should enable the PCMCIA card again.

Thanks for your analytical reply. I will try to do what you said. Already I have had some luck, but your reply is excellent and I will try what you suggested step by step before I proceed with anything else.

I would like to ask you though, just in case, I have done some kind of uninstallation of the old drivers with a different method, but now, I cannot proceed with uninstallation because there is the Ethernet Controller driver missing. I cannot install that either, because it misses a file. I will post back after following your method, but if it fails(which I highly doubt), could you please suggest something on this.

Kind Regards,
Alex George

Hello again, none of these registry modifications have taken part in the installation of the Netgear Drivers.

At present, after alot of effort, I am at the position where the WG511T Netgear card software with the driver version 4.3 has been installed. But, I get error code 12 in Device Manager and the only activity of the network card is the blinking of the Link LED from time to time.

There is a permanent yellow exclamation mark in the card's entry in the Device Manager below Network Adapters.

I have already disabled the 1394 Network Adapter, COM1 and Connexant 56Kbps Modem in an attempt to release resources in favor of the Netgear network card, but to no avail.

Any Suggestions on how to get rid of Error Code 12 and i.e. the exclamation mark would be gladly appreciated.
Regards,
AlexGeorge
