Twice have I installed Antivir, and although it appears a good application, what is the point of having an Antivirus that will not update?

This is rediculous, there servers are rubbish!!

Ive gone back to Kaspersky!!!

Hi Delgado,
I also have Antivir (free version) and have no problems with the updates.

Sorry it didn't work with your system, but if Kaspersky does then that is a good one also.

I agree with mrsugg on both points.

I have had excellent free service from AntiVir for nearly two years now.

Updates had been without problem (invisible) on dial-up connections.

About one detection every three months (with Hueristic's maxed to High) and half of those were False Positive,
quickly fixed by AVIRA and half were True Malware prevented by AntiVir from compromising my System.

There has been no doubt that the popularity of AntiVir Classic along with the increase of malwares has caused occasional overload of their Free Servers.

This has been limited to a few weeks every few months when large Program Updates have been released.

With the latest build 268, AVIRA has tried to relieve this Server Overload by limiting Update access for Dial-up Users.

The Scheduled Update job used to offer the following feature:

Quote:
[_] Start job while connecting to the Internet (dial-up)

The above feature is no longer available for Dial-up subscribers.

I had posted a notice on the AntiVir Forum

As mentioned there, my solution was to create a 'preupd' shortcut on my desktop. Very Happy

I've been using Avira PE classic for about a month and just this past week they had another program update. It was painfully slow getting that update. Other than that particular update and one evening when the servers were down, updates have went ok here. I've heard that updating when Europe is asleep will get you better speeds. Mrsugg reminded me in another thread that the paid version of Avira has a premium server for updates. Another option for a free solution is Avast, I had absolutely no trouble with it and updates were always perfect.

Cheers

I have only used Avira Premium, and did not experience any problem.

However, update is a problem with the Classic, as evidenced by the number of complaints on the various forums including the Avira forum. There does not seem to be an end in sight.

I guess one either accepts it or goes to another AV or paid version.

Best,
Jerry

Thanks for replies guys.

I tried this application again, mainly because I like the programme, and I am now getting updates ok. Maybe I tried before when the servers were overloaded, also maybe it would be better to move to the paid version.

Very Happy

Greetings,

I've been using this since 2000 when I became fed-up with Norton's resource-hogging AV.

I've only recently had a issue with automatic updates - the message pop-up indicating that I hadn't updated for 3 days.

This was resolved by running a manual update from the AVCentre - it needed a second attempt before this succeeded, presumably because of their servers being busy.

As an aside, Avira/AVPE has a better detection-rate than either AVG or Avast.

The only caveat is that it doesn't scan emails - but this is countered by the fact that it is designed to detect processes which attempt to start/are running.

Of course, having other security applications also helps to protect your system from infections - for example, my firewall (Agnitum Outpost Pro) scans emails.

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

Hi Dragon Glas,

Thanks for your comments. I have in fact now purchased the paid version of Antivir, and my updates are working very well, and very fast.

I am very pleased with this programme now, and the price I paid for the Premium Version, (approx £12) was so cheap for a programme of this class!!

I apologise for the above faux pas. Embarassed

I should have said that Outpost actually checks for attachments, which might be potentially dangerous, and renames them.

SpySweeper also has it's own email attachment "shield" which does something similar.

In any case, since Avira/AVPE is designed to detect malicious processes as they start, opening a email attachment would trigger the AV in the event of it being dangerous.

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas
