This may be a basic question, but...
Does all software designed for XP also work with Vista?

Or are there restrictions/incompatibilities? Office 2003, etc?

most of it does, having being updated, and certainly Office suits but there is software that is only XP or only Vista compatible (like some firewalls). That fact (what is compatible with) is usually stated

Hi, Seanus. If you are contemplating upgrading your existing PC to Windows Vista, I suggest you use the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. You can also check the Software Compatibility List.

In particular, note that a lot is dependent upon whether you are planning on a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows Vista. Software developers have been much slower in upgrading to 64 bit.

Although I haven't updated it in a bit, I have lists of both Windows Vista compatible firewalls and antivirus software here:
