|
|
My Internet Explorer has been hijacked so that my homepage is reset to allneedsearch.com and a list of seven adult sites is added to my favorites. If I reset my homepage and delete the favorites and then close and re-open Internet Explorer, the favorites reappear and the allneedsearch page is my homepage again. Also, I will occasionally be redirected from whatever site I am viewing and sent to a site called adultwebmasters.com.
I have run CWshredder (v1.38.2) and it detects and removes "cws.alfasearch" and "cws.msconfd" but if I run CWshredder again it says the same thing. So it seems they are never actually removed.
I have Windows XP and my hijackthis log follows. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Where all of your browser windows closed when you did the above? If not close all your browser windows and run CWS again.
After doing that download and run Spybot, carrying out a fullscan and fixing all items detected. Then reboot, run HijackThis and post back a new log.
thanks,

Hi John G - You have a problem in your winsock layers. Go here and download and run WinsockXPFix.exe. Reboot afterwards.
Now, let's try this, close IE and run Hijack This again. Select the below entries and click on Fix Selected.

When you have done this, boot into safe mode (restart your PC and tap F8 as it restarts), make sure that yu can view hidden files and folders and run a search for the below files and when you find them, delete them.
msupdate.exe
svchost.exe (NB This file is in C:\Windows)
winlogon.exe (probably also in C:\Windows. The genuine MS file is in the System32 suddirectory)
Boot back into normal mode, run Hijack This again and post back a new log.
*EDIT* Ooops, sorry Acheton, I was still typing while you were posting. I didnt see your reply.

|

First off, Acheton and OrphanAnnie, thank you both. Since Acheton, replied first I went with those instructions.
I did have all browsers closed when I ran CWShredder the first time but I did it again just to double check and still the same (detects and says it removed CWS.Alfasearch & CWS.Msconfd but they are still there if I run CWShredder again). I then ran Spybot per your advice and fixed all of the checked items. I then restarted and still the same problem with Internet Explorer. Allneedsearch.com is set as my homepage and the adult sites are added to my favorites. And even in the middle of typing this reply the page was suddenly redirected to the adultwebmasterscripts.com site.
I ran hijackthis again and I am posting the log per Acheton's instructions though I suspect the next thing to do is to follow the steps OrphanAnnie listed. I wanted to check first. Please let me know what I should try next. Thank you.

This is a new variant of coolwebsearch that we are dealing with here and CWShredder doesnt pick it up yet John G. Repair your winsock first as per my earlier instructions.
Then close IE and all open windows fix the below entries with Hijack This.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://webcoolsearch.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://allneedsearch.com/spm.htm

Thanks OrphanAnnie. I ran the WinsockXPFix. Then I rand Hijack This and selected everything you recommended. I restarted and searched for what you suggested. I did not find msupdate.exe.
I found svchost.exe in three places: C:\I386; C:\WINDOWS\I386; and C:\WINDOWS\system32. I have not deleted these yet as I was not sure if they all need to be deleted.
I found winlogon.exe in four places: C:\I386; C:\WINDOWS\I386; C:\WINDOWS\system32; and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start menu\Programs\Startup. I deleted the last one but I am not sure about the first two. Should those be deleted also?
Thanks again for the help so far. After all of the above, I ran hijack this again and the log is attached. Please let me know what else I should do.

Hi John G - you deleted the correct file (winlogon.exe). Dont delete svchost.exe, all the files that you found are legitimate windows files.
You still have the hijacker on board though. There has been a new version of CWShredder released in the past 24 hours. Delete the current version and download the new version from here. Run it as before, reboot afterwards and post back a new Hijack This log.

Thanks again for everything thus far. My IE is working fine at the moment -- no being redirected, nothing added to my favorites, no changed homepage. I ran the latest CWShredder (v1.39.1) and I still seem to have the problem where it detects and says it removes CWS.Msconfd but if I reboot and run CWShredder again it's still there.
In follow up, I 've run hijack this again and that latest log is below.

OK John G, this may not be an issue (your log looks fine) but I will ask the author of CWShredder about your problem and post back his response.

Please do not piggyback on someone else's thread.
Do the following:
Go to http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download Hijack This.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, and save the log somewhere.
NOTE: Most of what Hijack This lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Next, go to the appropriate section of this board.
Press "New Topic", explain your problem, and copy and paste the contents of the Hijack This log into your new message. You'll get expert assistance in dealing with your problem.

Hi again John G - try this fix kindly provided by Mosaic1.
This must be done in the exact order.
First thing to do is to create a couple of registry files:
Create the first file by copying the contents of the first Quote Box to Notepad. Name the file appinit.reg Save as All files and put it in C:\
Windows will access this file on a reboot. So it has to be there.
| Quote: | REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"="" |
Create the second file: Copy the second quote box and name fix.reg . After you have created fix.reg, double click on it to enter into the registry.
This is going to remove the msconfd file on a reboot and clear the registry entry which is loading it.
| Quote: | Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
"msconfd.dll"="cmd /c Attrib -h -r -s \"C:\\windows\\system32\\msconfd.dll\" & del \"C:\\windows\\system32\\msconfd.dll\""
"bye"="regedit /s C:\\appinit.reg" |
Close up and reboot. See if your problem has cleared.
If not, try moving msconfd.dll to another folder. Run the fix again and then try deleting it.

I had the same problem, and I just fixed it using the instructions you guys posted. Thanks a bunch. For anyone else with this problem, I did the following, it is just a reiteration of what is already posted, but the whole list is right here instead of broken up between several postings:
Download and run Spybot, fix the stuff it finds, reboot.
Download and run HijackThis, fix the following, posted by OrphanAnnie:

msupdate.exe
svchost.exe (NB This file is in C:\Windows)
winlogon.exe (probably also in C:\Windows. The genuine MS file is in the System32 suddirectory)
Download and run the latest version of CWShredder and reboot.
All of the things I downloaded were from links from other postings. This forum was very helpful in fixing my problem. Thanks again.

Glad we could help Thingslayer
It looks as though John G may have resolved his issue so I'll close this thread. If you have any further problems John G and would like this thread re-opened, feel free to PM any of our staff. _________________ Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience 2004-2008
