The update is obtained by running Firefox > Tools > Extensions, right-clicking the NetCraft extension and chosing update in the Foxfire toolbar.

I guess that I will really have to look closer for any differences between the IE an FF versions. The version numbers are different but I use the two interchangeably without seeing a difference.
Incidentally, there is a front page article today about a new toolbar guaranteed to solve all your security worries. I have it installed and the initial tests have not impressed me all that much. I left a comment on the article but want to give it a bit more time before adding it to the list.

I read that article [CallingID for the Internet] too and then checked out the vendor's site which said it is only free for the first year. I also checked out the white paper link which described it in more detail but not much about methodology. The article ends by saying that it includes more than 50 algorithms that analyze the pages and sites behind the page in order to ID exposures, phishing, pharming and other risks.
Time and testing will tell if its any good.

So far all that it has shown me is the country of hosting and some basic whois info. It does have a "risk rating" feature but I don't have enough experience with it yet to really understand it. It doesn't seem to mind porn sites so far.

Improvements include warnings on newly registered sites and Hosts file modification checks for every site you visit. Also several bug fixes.
Note: The new version number does not show up on the website but I just downloaded, installed and verified it as 2.3.8. The installation includes an option to install into Firefox.

I wondered about that choice myself, hence the note in my earlier post. To be fair, I don't know of any problems using the search itself and even a couple of their other products are considered legitimate.

It just seems odd that a toolbar specifically created to protect against fraudulent sites would choose to utilize a company that has ahem questionable practices.
I can only compare to what I would do if it was my toolbar, and I would not want to invite question as to my trustworthiness by having questionable alliances embedded in the product.

In all honesty, I can't think of any of the major search engines that I trust too far. In my experience or opinion all of them have some sort of problem either in their past or present.
