I run xp2 and have two drives that I have no idea where they came from. They are labeled E: which is 38.5 megabytes and is formatted in fat32, and F: which is 3.89 gigabytes and also formatted in fat32. I realize they are just partitions of C: which is formatted in NTFS, but don't where they came from. I do not run any backup programs like norton ghost and they both appear empty, any ideas?

Are you saying they just appeared out of the blue one day? What are drive C (I assume your boot drive) and D (an optical?).

How many harddrives are physically installed in that computer?

Is there or has there been any external harddrives attached?

I have only one hard drive yes and have never had another drive attached.I have no idea where they came from. I do have a mda and blackberry phone that i link to pc but they have never had this happen. What I find strange(outside their appearance) is the formatting difference.

Well, MDA - I assume mail delivery agent - may use the small drive space, and you BB - does it take picture? and use a memory card?

When you right click on the drive icons and hit properties, what does it say they are?

You might want to run through the CastleCops MRP to make sure your system is clean.

I'd be hesitent to go in and start deleting drives without knowing more about them. What kind of computer is this? Many PC makers put hidden drives on their systems for recovery.

Do you have a card reader attached - either USB or firewire?

Well, I did not help you much. I don't know that Dell will either but it would be interesting to see what they say. Are the icons for these drives the same as your C or boot drive. You could delete them with Partition Magic - but if this Dell is still under warranty, you may not want to.

Any help or comments always give insight and direction to paths that you may not have been thinking about and are always appreciated. Yes both the drives have the same icon as C: I will let you know what dell has to say about it.

What oops? Did you delete them?

I have heard that many Dell computers have hidden recovery partitions. Yours just got un-hid somehow. You can explore them with windows explorer to see what files are on them and that would give you a lot of insight. If you right-click a file and choose "Properties" it will tell you the author, the version, the date, etc. Then you know where it comes from.

dell said the drive was a backup drive but is normally hidden. Did't give me an answer on how the drive became visible. My folder view is set on don,t show hidden files and folders. Guess I will finally be able to get some sleep now, lol.

Dell said "THE" drive but you opened this post with "two" unexplained drives. Did Dell have an explanation for that too, or are you going to be awake for another week?
