Hello friends,

What is "scanningprocess.exe"? Why are there 2 instances of this running? Why is there no documentation in the Zone Alarm manual for this process/annoyance?

Thank you.

One is for the AV scanner, the other is for the AS scanner. All you had to do was ask.

Why are they still there when I disable virus and spyware scanning?

Did you go into the scanners and disable all the separate scanners?

I think what the Guest was getting at is that the process is still running without an active scan going on. To answer that, they are background processes and provide real-time protection from virus and spyware attacks.

So as long as ZA is running, those processes should be running also.

Am I correct in my assumptions?

The best part of the old Zone alarm was it didn't drag your resources down. The two instances of this process takes a ridiculous amount of memory. It might as well be Norton. I still love it but I'm a little disappointed. Wink

Well, I just upgraded to the Suite, and so far it's not too bad. I have noticed that programs take longer to launch, but that's about it. I guess I'll have to live with it. Or I could just up my memory.

It's not just memory. Both (scanningprcess.exe) processes hog cpu to the point that I suspect they are the reason that my laptop occasionally takes 5-10 mins to come out of standby/ hibernate. Could this be it?

Like the other guest... I have used Zonealarm for a few years, and a big part of the reason was the minor disturbance to your resources. That seems to have changed with recent versions. Yes.... like the dreaded Norton. What can I do?

Come to the land of Comodo. The weather is nice in Kaspersky-ville too.

All it seems to do on my machine is run up to about 25,000 and then sit there until called. So I have the two scanningprocess.exe processes at 25,000 and the vsmon @ 25,000 and the zlclient @ 9,000 at startup.

But after they fire up, they just wait. I still run between 70 and 80 percent idle. And I only have 512MB SDRAM on a 1.7Ghz P4. So I don't know why other systems are being slowed down so much.

Like I said, I noticed an increase in load times for some programs, but once they load, they run fine.

Most people probably mean with 'slowed down' that the booting and the loading of an account takes really long.

We have 3 computers and all had ZoneAlarm but our laptopl only has 256 MB memory and was really slow with booting, etc.
Then I removed ZoneAlarm, and some other big resource takers, and the booting is working better now.

I am VERY disappointed! I have been a long time fan of Zone Alarm, and recently paid to upgraded to ZA Security Suite so that firewall, antivirus, antispyware, are all in one suite.

Like other posters, I now find that my PC takes 5 minutes and sometimes more to finish booting. And between the two instances of scanningprocess.exe, vsmon, and zlclient, resident processes I find I am now a total of 94,000K down in memory! I only have 512mb to start with. (I found this discussion because I am trying to make my PC run and boot faster, and I wanted to know what the two "scanningprocess.exe"s were.)

I am particularly annoyed that on boot up, nothing else can happen until ZA has gone through its update processes for antivirus and anti-spyware. And I have now stopped this - but everytime I opened Outlook, I had to wait for ZA to scan all unread messages before I could use the application!!!

What on Earth as happened to my beloved firewall? I don't run the major commercial competitors because they hog resources. And now it looks like I will have to look for a new alternative...
