Just a remark about that: ZoneAlarm is a firewall which slows your computer down more than any other firewall. There are also other firewalls which slow your computer less down:
Comodo
Kerio

Startuplist is fine... Hardly any processes running either...
Try deleteing all files that you can in your temp folder
Start>Run>%temp
When you run task manager is anything showing with high CPU utilization? _________________ Bibo ergo sum....

One thing I have discovered - its a terrible thing to do inplace install if IE 7 is installed. I have finally sorted this out. Following errors in the event log remain... of course the normal boot is unusable, 5+ mins between each user action.
The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 80040154 from line 44 of d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. This may indicate that the COM+ Event System is not properly installed. Please try reinstalling the COM+ Event System.
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040206.
There is nothing installed on d drive......

The most sensible post I have foudn the above is that these are bogus errors because I wnet into safe mode. In which case there are no errors in the event log (all the others are cascaded errors from above). So My system is still slow to boot and now unusable
I have reinstalled nvidia, kbd and mouse drivers. I have doen a complete memory and disk test again. All drives have been chkdsked and defragged. There is 4G virtual memory and 2G ram. Tons of hard disk spae is available. Temp has been cleaned.

What is your cpu utilisation looking like in task manager?
Any process in particular showing high cpu or memory usage? _________________ Bibo ergo sum....

Task manager is always quiet. Once an app is running, it runs ok for the most part but for the odd minute long pause. The main pauses appear to be related to shell/file/registry related.
The first error in the event log is this. I have already tried a few things such as com dll registrations and iinstalling IE7. Any other ideas.
"The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 80040154 from line 44 of d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. This may indicate that the COM+ Event System is not properly installed. Please try reinstalling the COM+ Event System."
The update still goes thru the cycle with the following error, I let it fix it but next time I get the same error
"Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer."

Any ideas anyone ? I have been sort of stuffed for many days now, since I did an inplace install/repair. Most important isuues outstanding
1. Cant update as files required for update arent there
2. System is slow... once an app is running its fine. But click on an application launch or start button and you have to wait for 10+minutes for a response.
Safe mode works fine. There is nothing running at startup, there are no services running but what is required for windows.
What I have done since then
1. HD and mem tests - all ok
2. chkdsk and defrag
3. reinstall IE7
4. remove and reintall zonealarm
5. clean installl nvidia
6. reinstaall kbd/mse drivers
7. reinstall java8.
8. run sfc
9. registered windows update and com+ dlls
10. Turned off hyperthreading

Hmmm - you're not using any sort of memory optimizing software, are you? Just a thought....
Do you have enough space for another partition? Then you could install your OS as a second partition and compare - that way you'd know for a fact that it is this install only as opposed to something else, like your hardware perhaps.... _________________ <img src="http://www.castlecops.com/zx/johnlgalt/johnlgalt%20sig.png">

I would still like to throttle some MS engineers.
Three problems are now fixed..
1. Slow startup/shutdown
2. Slow explorer, windows etc
3. Windows update working
Event log entries fixed
8193 Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040206.
4610 The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 80040154 from line 44 of d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. This may indicate that the COM+ Event System is not properly installed. Please try reinstalling the COM+ Event System.
The Fix
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose

The best entry I found for this was that its a known problem, sounded like it was not going to be fixed properly. There is a temporary hotfix for it, which I have had to apply to MS for.
