I updated to version 8 two days ago, I saw some message that it found a virus and took care of it.
Today I can't open the user interface and all my email has disappeared from my inbox in Thunderbird.
Just wondering if there is a connection here.

I have two computers that were negatively affected by AVG 8 free. One is totally crashed, the other I managed to get running again. I am not amused.

I couldn't install or uninstall programs - until I found out the new AVG Free v8 is the culprit. Uninstalled it, substituted it with a less fussy alternative product - problem solved.
Pity, really. I liked their previous frills-free and small footprint approach a lot.

I, too, liked the no-frills AVG 7.5 better. First problem out of the gate is AVG's "Link Scanner" that scans all weblinks *before* you click them. Pages take weeks to load, and on more than one occassion, locked up the computer.
TURN OFF LINK SCANNER!!! Then the tray icon reverts to the "you're not protected" red exclamation mark (!). Even with link scanner turned off, AVG 8 is completely intrusive, overbearing and SLOOOOO...W. Resident Shield appears to getted bogged down or something and begins to hog resources. The computer grinds to a halt on loading aplications, browsing, ... everything. Turning off Resident Shield (or re-booting) so far seems to reset AVG's behavior, but it's only temporary.
If Grissoft doesn't fix this soon, I too will be looking for other AV software. __RonR

I am having problems also.
When I installed 8.0, it updated automatically and did a daily scan.
It has now stopped updating and is not doing the daily scan.
Any ideas?
Should I reinstall?
Do I have to uninstall before doing a reinstall?

Hi johnoo, and Welcome to CC
You should be able to install over the top of your existing installation. However, as you are experiencing problems it may be best to uninstall, reboot and reinstall. Run the AVG Free installation program and you will get the option to uninstall various components or the whole lot. You also get a Repair option which may be worth trying first.
Before you do anything, check the AVG Scheduler. Open AVG by double clicking the icon in the systray (bottom right of the screen). Go to Tools, Advanced and click the '+' sign next to Schedules. Click on 'Virus database update schedule' and check the settings. Then click 'Scheduled scan' and check the settings. I have mine both set to 'Run at a specific time' - update at 4.00 am and scan at 6.00 am (that's only because I get up at a ridiculous hour). I also check 'Run on startup if the task has been missed'.
If all looks OK in the schedule then a repair or reinstall would be best, but checking the Schedule settings would be a good start. _________________ Never stop learning

Mister 2,
Thanks for reply but it poses yet more problems.I have gone into TOOLS Advanced settings clicked onto "Schedules" but there is no + sign. it just gives a message "select shedule you want to edit from branch on left" but nowhere do I see Virus database etc. or anywhere to enter a runtime etc.
Any ideas? is there more than one version of 8.0?
Any help would be kindly accepted, i am away from the M/c for a few days so cant give you promt feedback

Mister 2,
strange i dont no how to do good screen prints like yours so i took a digi picture attached.
As you see no + next to the Schedule key.
Same version, two agendas
Does AVG work in the background to stop Virue etc without scanning?
How do I resolve the problem?

Looks like that is the reason for yours not updating - I would guess the scheduler has got corrupt. Try repairing first and if that doesn't do it then uninstall AVG and reinstall.
I would think you still have realtime protection though your definition file will not be up to date unless you open AVG and click the Update Now button (on the main screen) manually.
You can check your protection by going to this page . Click the link to eicar.com 68 bytes half way down that page, just below the red text. AVG should pop up a warning box, proving your protection is running. If this is the case, click Cancel and then choose not to download the file. If not then cancel the download anyway.
This is a test file designed for testing antivirus programs - it is not harmful or malicious but it will get flagged by AVG.
Your 'screen capture' method shows what I needed to know. I use Screen Hunter Free to copy an image of the screen to the Clipboard. I then open Irfanview (also free), go to Edit, Paste and save as a JPG file.
Let me know if you still have problems after repairing or reinstalling AVG. _________________ Never stop learning
