|

I just did Windows updates on 3 pc. The two with Zone Alarm Pro will not connect to the net. I just time out. I turned off Zone Alarm and turned on Windows Firewall and I am able to connect. The third PC only has Windows Firewall so I had no problems.

From ZoneAlarm Forum
We are investigating the issue with the MS update KB951748.
For the time being we suggest you uninstall KB951748 until the issue has been resolved.
We will post when we have more information

Howdy,
Look at the installation date - it shows 9 July 08 - everything should be okay tomorrow.
I have spent the day telling people to uninstall the update all day long and all have reported the same installation date of tomorrow. _________________ "Anyone who considers protocol unimportant has never dealt with a cat."

Mine said that it was July 9 as well! I uninstalled and everything was fine.
Except, thanks to their crap job I ended up wasting a couple hours trying to unravel this and involved my ISP support department in the issue too!

If you are not on an active directory domain.
(This would mean most if not ALL home PC users.)
Uninstall the update. AND disable the DNS Client service in Windows.
All will be well.
The service is totally not needed and the recommended setting is Disabled anyway. _________________ MS's "New Coke"

ZASS V 7.0.470.000 Firewall has the same problem. Last night I installed Firefox. At first I thought it was Firefox and started searching for answers, fortunately I found this post before updating my 3rd computer. Next problem, I am running XP SP3, the update KB951748 does not appear in Add or Remove Programs, so how do I uninstall it?

Thanks mrrockford. Tick the "show updates box" works , my eyesight must be getting worse. Uninstalled the offending update, the internet is back. My installation date showed 8th of July. It is Wednesday 9th of July in Australia and the problem was still existing! Bad_Frogger is there any benefit from disabling the Windows DNS Client service? It does not seem necessary.

The benefits are avoiding problems like this in the future for a totally unnecessary service.
And just not having more junk running that you do not need. _________________ MS's "New Coke"

OK, thanks Bad_Frogger. Joined Castlecops yesterday. It was definetly worth joining. So far the members appear to be genuine caring people.

A workaround or circumvention, instead of uninstalling the update, is to lower the Internet Zone level from High to Medium. All network access should work after this.

Another problem:
The Malicious Software Removal Tool that comes bundled with the Windows July updates seems to check for a genuine Windows copy (WGA technology???).
Additionally, I was asked to accept (or decline) a license.
Anyone else experienced this?

I had more severe problems than just loss of Internet access! A Windows 2000 machine here at work just went bananas. It wouldn't let programs run (it said that they weren't valid Windows executables), it wouldn't shut down (you do not have the right to shut down the machine) and eventually it just hung the machine totally. The only way out was to turn off the power then boot the machine into safe mode and uninstall ZoneAlarm!
