Hi to all,

Can anyone please help me to try to work out, what is stopping me from getting any downloads from the Windows Update site?
As all i get is a screen saying the following:

Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software

And in my Norton Internet Security 2002 log files i have the following entries when ever i try to get onto the Windows Update site:

Date: 05/09/2004 Time: 21:01:50
Removed http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/library/toolbar/3.0/images/banners/windows_masthead_ltr.gif
From http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/mstoolbar.aspx?ln=en-us
Because /banners/

Date: 05/09/2004 Time: 21:03:51
Removed http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/library/toolbar/3.0/images/banners/windows_masthead_ltr.gif
From outbound connections
Because /banners/

I also got this on the logfile when i came onto this web forum:

Date: 05/09/2004 Time: 21:25:25
Removed CastleCops Link/images/banners/soap.gif
From outbound connections
Because /banners/

I have checked everywhere in Norton and i can't work out what is stopping this page from opening properly.
Also, if i go onto the Windows Update website with Norton disabled, i get the full page and the logo on the top left load up.
But, still the page refuses to go any further.

My operating system is Windows XP Home SR1, all updates installed up to about 1 week ago, and Pop-Up-Stopper and ID-Blaster working in the background.
It is still the same with these disabled as well.

Thanks in advance.

Hi to all,

I think i have it worked out...

I went to the Windows Update help, and then went to the Microsoft Newsgroup forum:

http://communities2.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&cat=en_US_56d1dd45-de9e-4fc5-9bc1-2d1d0de6daee&lang=en&cr=US

And looked at the topic about Update Software, and the reply to this topic is all about registering files.
I registered the last file, and went to the Windows Update site, and it seems to be working again.
Although something is still stopping the top logo loading, but the main thing is that Windows Update is working again.

Also i had to allow "Generic Host Process for Win32" access out of my computer, for the list of updates to load.

Thank you for the space to put my question, and i hope that this reply can help someone else.

Did you try re registering the dll files whilst in safe mode?

There has previously been a lot of discussion on this subject here:

CastleCops Link/postx106642-0-180.html

The post by Angus49 seems to have resolved the issue for some people, but work your way through the discussions and see if they are of help.

Hi again, i followed the steps from Angus, sorry to say but i still cant access the window update sites, also after doing the procedures I now have 3 software distribution folders?? 1: software distribution 2: softwaredistribution.old 3: SD.old.

Also that REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL did not succeed in safe mode either, keeps saying cannot find the module.

Ive also been working with Microsoft on the phone to overcome this problem, they sent me 2 files via email

WinSecureXP
AutoUpdate

they never helped either.

I formatted my pc 2 weeks ago and did a fresh clean install, this never helped one bit, im at wits end with this problem, it really is a nightmare. 1 week ago i could rech as far as entering the windows update site and clicking express for updates, then it would just do nothing, after logging in 1 day i tried to access updates again, now it wont load at all, just says Page Cannot Display...etc etc..

I cannot even access any microsoft sites at all, nor some secure sites. Its driving me crazy!! any other suggestions guys and gals? cheers!!

Flush DNS Cache:
Make sure any browser windows are closed. Go to Start, Run and type in following command into the text box:

ipconfig /flushdns

(note the space between 'ipconfig' and '/flushdns') and click OK. You should see a black window flash briefly. Open your browser and try one of the sites again.

Hosts File: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts
Open 'My Computer' and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc and you should see a file named hosts. Right click this file and select Open, then choose Notepad to open it with. Check if there is an entry for any of the problem sites in there (use Edit/Find)

Have a read through the following which might help you replace the .dll you are having problems with;

How to use scannow sfc...

"The main reason for using this utility is when you suspect there may be a problem with a Windows XP system file.

Perhaps you get a dialog box appear informing you of a problem with a .dll file, or your program will just not load! It is therefore worth checking to see if there are any corrupt system files using scannow sfc.

To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem."

Well blow me down Blacky! UNBELIEVABLE!! After the auto updates installed and I restarted pc, I now can access windows update site and all microsoft sites WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!! OMG! thank god for that!! I tell ya what i did do , and im not sure if this helped or not?? But last night i tried to install IE7 but couldnt, I was using IE6..... so as i couldnt get IE7 from microsoft, I went to google instead and DL the IE7 from google with the google toolbar pre-installed, and it installed perfect. So i switched off pc after that, and now when i logged in auto updates came yippee! dunno if that IE7 helped or not, ??? who knows, another thing too lol i was cleaning pc room before i logged on, and knocked my HD over haha maybe that taught it a lesson hehehe
