Appparenty I have gotten infected with the Trojan.ByteVerify. I have updated and run Norton AV, and nothing was found. I have run Spybot, and have now run Hijack. I have tried to clean up the host file. But everytime I reboot, it comes back, so obvously there is an executable file somewhere that sets it all back up.

I am running XP Home.

One site suggested that I delete svchost.exe and winlogon.exe but I am hesitant to do so.

I also had trouble editing the host file with notepad. When saving it, I got error mesages such as invalid path and name. Is there an extension for the host file? There are also a number of them on the machine, which ones should be fixed?

here is the startup list from hijack:

What was the program that indicated Trojan.ByteVerify? Was it a confirmed infection or a possible infection?

Hi Rangerboy,

First off you have a number of problems including a variant of Coolwebsearch and let's get rid of that first.

Please download the special tool
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip

You can just doubleclick on it and hit the *next button* and it will fix what it finds.

Next Reboot your PC

Then run another scan with HijackThis and post a new log back here. There will be more to do.

Norton AV had given me indicatins while surfing that it had blocked some things that were infected with this virus. It is posible that at one point I was surfing with the NAV autoprotect disabled, as I sometimes need to do that to get my Iomega ZIP drive to work with password protected disks.

Hi Calamity!

I d/l and used CWShreader in safe mode and boy did that thing just take off and do exacty what its name sugested! It found everything and destroyed it, along with the file that was recreateing everything on reboot, which was winlogon.exe that was in the allusers\startup folder. It also fixed up most of the entries in the hosts file. I ran hijackthis after CWShreader, and got this log:

Hi Rangerboy Hello

It looks good to me Thumbs Up

Glad to see you have followed up with the necessary windows updates. You might also want to check this page to see what else you can do to prevent future problems of this nature Smile

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hi Calamity

Thats for the resonse.

Even thought i did all the updates, I got hit with it again! Nortan AV notified me that there were incoming infected files, and blocked them, but I ran CWS again and it detected some things changed! I was abit surprised by that, since I had done the updates. But I ran the shreader and HJT before rebooting and it got rid of everything.

I read the article you sugested and it has a lot of good information on it. I will look at the links it provides and do those things as well.

Too bad we cant just enjoy the web without having to worry about webterrorists!

Hey Rangerboy....sorry to hear that Sad

Be sure that you have updated the CWShredder tool. It has an update button on it to check and download the latest version. Or you can just redownload the latest version (ver. 1.39.8 )
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip

You do have the latest version of HiJackThis but also need to check it for updates regularly as well. To do that you can just open HiJackThis, click on *config*, then *misc. tools*and press the *check for update online* button.

It is recommended you check for updates often (no less than every week) as new variants are coming out all the time.

The windows updates are just one step in several you need to take. It is getting very treacherous out there if you don't secure your browser and get some additional protection. That link to the article Tony Klein wrote up should help get you started. It's worth repeating here Smile
