I removed the software for an old MS Sidewinder gamepad that I don't use any more and for some reason the thing also removed the GAME OPTIONS file in my Control Panel. This same thing happend to me a few years ago (I think the same controller caused it too) but for the life of me I can't recall how I fixed it. I know I was able to install the missing file from my WIN98 cd but I don't remember what the file was called or how to install just the one file. (I do remember that before I did fix it some genius tech support guy told me to do a complete reinstall of Win and it totally screwed up my whole system. He told me I could not just install ONE thing from the disc which turned out to be false.) I remember that it was VERY easy to fix, I think it was just a command typed into the RUN space and the name of the file.

I ran the system checker but it didn't find anything missing (there is nothing in the wast basket either). There is in the sytem checker an option to extract one file from the disc but I don;t know what the file name is or where to put it to get it back in the control panel. I know that wasn;t the way I fixed it last time but there are probably many ways to install one file.

Can someone tell me the name of the file and how to install it from my WIN cd. Could it have been called "joy.cpl"? I came across that looking for what to do on the Win support pages and it rang a big bell. It might be the name of the file perhaps? Can someone please help, I got some new games for Christmas and now can't play them. "Help me Obi-wan you're my only hope."

I got it fixed so the mod can remove this is he wants to. It was the joy.cpl file and it seems it was the sytem checker I used last time, I just accessed it through RUN by typing "sfc" in it. I couldn't find joy.cpl on my WIN98 disc but it turns out I didn't need to. The file was restored by installing the newest version of DX (9.0 something). I was lucky there WAS a new version though, doesn;t DX detect if you have the current version already and refuse to let you reinstall? Anyway I was able to fix it (stupid Sidewinder software) so thanks anyway. Everyone have a Happy New Year!!
