Hi,

Just wondered if anyone could help me with this problem. I downloaded the latest updates for AntiVir (I've got version six Personal Edition Classic). Anyway I ran the checker after downloading and everything was fine.

Now, though everytime Windows has loaded I get the erro message "-VWUPSRV.EXE has encountered a problem and needed to close". When I click for more details in the error report it points to the following files
"C:\document~1\user\local~1\Temp\WER3tmp.dir00\-VWUPSRV.EXE.mdmp" and "C:\document~1\user\local~1\Temp\WER3tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt".

The AntiVir guard seems to load OK and the virus checker seems fine, but it is annoying to see on every start up.

Just wondering if anyone could help. Thanks in advance for your time and any help that you can give.

Pete

Fistly, can you please clear out all your temp windows and temp internet files. You can do this by running the Disk Space Cleanup Manager (click Start/Run and type cleanmgr then click OK).

Then have a look in your Services box (click Start/Control Panel/Performance & Maintenance/Administrative Tools/Services), double click the AntiVir Update Service (AVWUPSRV.exe), to bring up its 'Properties' box, and ensure that it's status is 'started' (ie running) and that its startup type is set to 'Automatic'.

While you're looking in the Services box, please also confirm that the AntiVir Service for AVGUARD.exe is also 'started' and set to 'Automatic'.

Let us know if this helps.

First of all thanks very much for the help - priceless to someone like me who hasn't got a clue!

I did as you said and cleared the files brought up by Cleanmgr. I then went into administrative tools and checked Antivir Service and Antivir Update - both were listed as Started and Automatic. Underneath these, though, there is a third Antivir listed - Antivir Update Temp - just to see what happened I disabled this and rebooted - no more error message! When I go back to Administrative Tools, Antivir Update Temp is still listed and disabled though - just wondering if this will cause any problems?

Thanks again for your advice, it really is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Pete.

This is very odd Eccer2001, we need to investigate further in case you have had a corrupted 'install'. Just to make sure all your temp files are gone have a look here:- http://personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm
Note how to clean out your temp files by running a search for *.tmp,*.chk,~*.*
(which you should copy and paste into your search box). That will find things left behind by cleanmgr.

If you bring up Task Manager (by right clicking to system tray or simultaneously pressing Ctrl Alt Delete) you should see, in the Processes tab, three processes relating to AntiVir, namely:- avguard.exe, avgnt.exe and avwupsvr.exe - please ensure these are all listed as running.

However in your Services box you should only have two entries:-

a) AntiVir Update Service (AVWUpSrv), and

b) AntiVir Service for realtime protection (AVGUARD.EXE)

So what is the third one you say you have? Can you please give the full 'Display name', 'Description' and 'Path to executable' as listed in the Services box.

Also, did you install under a full 'Administrator' account?

Thanks for your reply and help.

I followed your advice and deleted all of the temp files identified. I then checked in Task Manager and the three processes relating to AntiVir you listed - avguard.exe, avgnt.exe and avwupsvr.exe - are all listed as running.

The 'third' entry in the services box is still there though, it is listed as ANTIVIR UPDATE TEMP. Under the Description column it is blank, under the Status column it is also balnk. Startup type was automatic, but I have changed it to disabled, as this is the only way I can start windows without the error message appearing. When clicking on Properties, I can see the following Path To Executable "C:\DOCUME~1\SANDRA\LOCALS~1\TEMP\_VWUPSRV.EXE". Sandra is the other person using the computer!

Yes, it was installed under a full adminstrator account.

I suggest that you get rid of the extra 'Service', which should not have been there in the first place and has obviously been causing conflicts.

The easy way to proceed is to download L5's 'Service Manager' from here:- http://www.l5sg.com/products/downloads/servicemanager/index.php

When you install this you will notice it gives a list of Services, just like the 'Windows' Service box, except it has the additional feature of a 'Remove' button. So you only have to select the errant service (by clicking on it in the list) and then click 'Remove' and it will be deleted.

Doing it this way saves having to go into the Registry to manually make the changes yourself. When you cleared your Temp locations you would have removed the files relating to the service (hence its blank status) but the Registry entries remain and I think it is worth erasing these.

If everything else is working fine I see no reason to do a complete 'clean' re-install of AntiVir, though that remains an option if you encounter further problems.

Let us know how it goes.

I downloaded the software and used it to delete the Antivir Temp service as described. The error message is gone and everything appears to be back to normal!

Many thanks for your invaluable help in sorting this out - it really is much appreciated and I am very grateful.

Cheers,

Pete.

Glad to hear everything is now running smoothly. Cool

Hopefully you'll be O.K. from now on, but let us know if you hit any more problems. Smile
