Hi krak,
AntiVir has very recently upgraded to Version 6.31. When a new Version is released there is usually no need to download and re-install it separately; normally you just click the G.U.I. to update your virus definitions and the new program will be automatically installed for you at the same time.
Your licence will continue to be valid so long as you are using AntiVir for your own private personal use and not for any commercial or business application.

No! The program is upgraded during the usual 'signature' updating process.
You just click the updater to receive the latest virus definitions, and if a new program version is available it will be automatically placed on your computer at the same time as the virus definitions.
Naturally, these product upgrades only occur every few months.

It seems like it is installing a whole new program. This makes me nervous.

As a general rule it is usually safer to D/L a program from the author's site than from a third party site. So, on balance, I would think there is less chance of receiving something you don't want by upgrading in this direct fashion, rather than going to a D/L site and obtaining an entirely new copy of the program from there.
