|
|
Hi all, I am setting up a PC I have just built and before connecting it to the internet I would like to install Anti-Vi PE and update it from the definitions I have downloaded onto my old PC, is it possible to do that ?, if so, how?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers.

You can download the latest version of avwinsfx.exe and save it to disc.
From the disc you can install it onto your new machine and immediately update to the latest virus definition file, as soon as you go online.
I daresay you could even D/L the most recent VDF file onto your old machine and also save it to disc. That way you could locate this into C:\Program Files\AVPersonal\Updates in replacement of the old VDF zip file; then you'd have the latest defs before even going on line - but I'm not sure why you'd want to do it that way.
The VDF can be obtained from here:-
http://www.free-av.de/updates/personal/vdf/antivir.vdf
Else you can copy and paste to disc, the VDF zip file from C:\Program Files\AVPersonal\Updates from your old computer.

Thanks for your suggestions TopperID, I'll have a go at them. The reason I wanted to try to have the latest AVD on my new PC before going online, is so that I could scan for suspected viruses and be sure that I didn't miss any recent viruses.
I'm currently trying to become familiar with XP on my new PC before going online and I've noticed some funny program names in MSCONFIG and task processes inTask Manager. When I've checked out the names online I find that it's difficult to tell if the Tasks/Processes are genuine or not because some Malware have the same names as the genuine programs. I thought by scanning with an up to date Anti-Virus tool the problem could be resolved.
Many thanks again for your help.

Hi rimrim,
When it comes to searching for details of items listed in the startup tab of msconfig, the best place to begin looking is here:- /StartupList.html
It is a useful exercise to familiarise yourself with the various autoruns - and perhaps suppress those you don't need running at startup!

Hi TopperID, the Startup link you posted was a good one, it seemed to be more detailed than some others I've seen. I tried to transfer the latest definitions from my old PC(Win98 OS) to my new PC(XP OS) but Anti-Vi 6 popped up a message saying they were not compatible. That's not a problem now, because after studying the Statup and Task processes on the link you gave and Answers that work, I'm satisfied that I don't have any Malware.
Many thanks again for your help.
