this is a "low priority" question, so it can go on the "backburner' behind other more important stuff.

"Data leakage", not the kind of spyware getting data, was discussed somewhere at CC during the last couple of months. But I still just can't get the concept in my head.

I have a 6 year old HP4446 PII(HP's version) that has an 18.6 GB IDE drive, with a single NTFS partition, 127 MB memory with 13 mb vailable, 1.9 GB virtual memory.

I run Win2K with the full MS suite and all the CC antispyware stuff.

There's no spyware etc. I get few cookies because of the browser(MYIE2).

The question is: every once in a while "things just "bog down" or just "stop working", like this morning MYIE2 just "quit". MSIE and Firefox wouldn't work either. Nothing was "running slow", the browsers just quit. I ran anti-spyware HJT found nothing. I restarted the computer, and everything was fine.

Like I've said, I've asked about this before, and it was explained as "data leakage" after the computer runs continuously for several days. There was some discussion of turning it off as opposed to leaving it on....

But, I don't run into this problem on the other computers(they are newer), but have had it with this one for years....Even when I ran Win98..... every so often "something" would just "quit".

So, again, this is low priority, but what is "data leakage"?

Hi there,

Basically it's due to memory dumps and a buildup of files in the TIF and Temp folders and prefetch folders. Rebooting dumps some of that stuff off. You may not notice it on the other machines so much as they may be higher spec and therefore it won't take such a toll on them.

A solution that helps greatly, aside from annoyingly having to reboot, is to regularly clean your junk (not to mention some malware that likes to hide in those folders) with an app such as CCleaner:

Before first use, check under Options, Settings, and ensure "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours" is unchecked.

Then open it and select the items you wish to clean up. This will remove any malware hiding in your Temporary Folders as well as freeing up a large amount of disc space
