My Windows security center for my [ Virus Protection ] tab says Antivir Personal Edition Classic reports that it is turned OFF(not active) the question is how do I Turn it ON the Active Guard?
I just downloaded and installed the newest Antivir version 6 today Aug 17th ,2005
To turn on Active Guard I've also tried this and ran across this problem:
1.open up avpe program
2.click on OPTIONS then CONFIGURATION.
3.click on MISCELLANEOUS.
4.The Problem under the heading..... AntiVir Tools...The check box(Load The Guard At System Start) is disable and highlighted in gray and therefore it prevents me from clicking the the check box to enable it.
Help would be great!

Howdy,
where did you download from and did you have AVPE installed before? Also please post exactly which version you have to include search engine, AvRep and VDF. _________________ "Anyone who considers protocol unimportant has never dealt with a cat."

Hi Nascarfan2004,
please uninstall AntiVir again. Maintain your windows - delete all tempfiles, tif's, activeXcontrols, recycle bin etc. - and download the current version from here:
[direct download]
Do to install the version in safe mode please. _________________ gruß mav

Well I've uninstalled Antivir and removed the program from my system all together to start all over from fresh.
So I am downloading the program all over again today....
AntiVir PersonalEdition for Window XP
AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic - all in one package
Program-Release: 6.31.00.03
VDF-Version: 6.31.01.143
Date: (MM-DD-YYYY) 08-18-2005
Time: 14:21:02
File name: avwinsfx.exe
File size: 6,91 MByte
So help would be needed!

If you are going to try a fresh install please do the following:-
1) When you D/L a fresh copy of AntiVir do not use a download manager and do ensure that avwinsfx.exe is fully downloaded (and that the D/L is not aborted just before the end).
2) Clean out your temp files by downloading and running CCleaner:- http://www.ccleaner.com/
(Or use any other cache cleaner such as CleanUp)
3) Uninstall your old copy of AntiVir and reboot into safe mode:- http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html
4) Ensure you are installing from a full Administrator account (and not merely a user account with Admin privileges).
5) Make sure all your security programs (like FW etc) are disabled before you install.
6) Run the installer setup; during the course of which you should remove the checkmark in front of "only new files" and leave the other 3 ticked (i.e. Guard, Updater & shell-extension).
7) Abort the "Luke Filewalker scan" and reboot to normal mode.
8.) Now update to receive the latest virus definitions.
9) Check the Guard is loaded and all appears well; if so you may proceed to a full system scan.
Do ensure you are not attempting to use more than one AV at a time - that is most important.

If you have problems during the installation (in the normal mode) then you should install AntiVir in safe mode. _________________ gruß mav

Hi there Mods,
From my experience and experiences of other people I know who use AntiVir, this problem with the Active Guard seems to be relatively common. Might I suggest posting this thread as a sticky?

Hi Dreaming Fox,
That's a good idea, though it occurs to me that some people may experience other difficulties with the Guard (such as the umbrella being closed or the icon being missing entirely) rather than the specific problem referred to in this thread.
Thus, so as to make the sticky as comprehensive as possible, it might be worth creating a full check list of all the things people need to consider if they have this type of problem.
That would save a lot of work, repeating things, the next time a user hits a similar obstacle. So unless anyone has other ideas I'll prepare a suitable entry and put it up it a day or so.
