|
|
When I first installed NAV2005 I was able to complete one full System Scan of 3 partitions, but not since then. The System Scan hangs part way into my D: drive after completing the scan of C:. I can Stop Scan and start a Drive Scan of D: with E: which works fine, or I can do a Drive Scan of individual drives without problem. The hang always occurs after a total of 43380-43860 files. It seems to occur at certain files, but each of those files scans fine individually or within a smaller set of files, and none are compressed, just HTML and Text. (On Drive Scans NAV2005 reports that C: has 40800 files, D: 41100 and E: 8300. I did succeed once with a Full System Scan in Safe Mode which managed to find 719k files, 8-times the 90200 total normally reported!!??)
Has anyone else seen this behavior and/or have a fix? I'd much rather do a scheduled single System Scan automatically than multiple manual Drive Scans. This makes me hesitant to buy NAV2006.
Several emails with Symantec have had me uninstall/reinstall LiveUpdate and go thru their Automated Support Assistant, but to no avail. Other things that the Symantec folks have had me check are --
A) I typically empty Windows Temp files before doing a Virus Scan or Backup. I don't use Internet Explorer (except to run things like Norton's Automated Support Assistant) but IE seems to accumulate Temporary Internet Files anyway so I purge them before doing a Virus Scan or Backup.
B) I always scan as Administrator.
C) Disk Checks by Windows 2000 are all clean on all drives.
D) Automated Support Assistant said LiveUpdate was out of date even though I run LiveUpdate daily. I used the Automated Support Assistant to update LiveUpdate "sucessfully", rebooted and re-ran Automated Support Assistant only to have it repeatedly tell me that "You have an old version of the "LiveUpdate" program." Obviously, there is a problem here!
BTW, I've been dealing with this problem for more than 8 months, but I just stumbled onto this Forum. Perhaps someone here has some fresh insight.

When did the problem start? Did you install the hotfix or something else or it started by itself?

The problem started by itself, as near as I can tell. The System Scan worked once after initial installation. I scheduled it to run weekly and it has never worked again, either scheduled or manual. No apparent updates to anything in that first week.

I just tried to help a friend with a similar problem:
Nortan AV2005 hangs after scanning some random number of files.
The problem usually occurs between file 10.000 and 20.000. We only tried full system scans.
Something odd seems to be linked to the problem which I do not think is a coincidence: during the scan the filenames are displayed, but after a while the file name does not change anymore, although the number of scanned items is still increasing.
I am a programmer myself and if this would happen to my program I would think that the code that decides whether or not to display the new filename (not all filenames are displayed for performance reasons) is buggy. My guess is that something goes wrong after a long run of short files or something like that.
In most cases the name of the current item had already been on the screen while 4.000 more files had been scanned and then the system would hang, although once the system hung immediately.
The system seems to be clean, XP professional no rubbish software installed.

I've seen this behavior also. NAV2005 shows the same file name for 20 mins. or so, while the file counter advances and the disk activity light is ON. I figured (as a former software writer, also) that maybe names of small files, or contents of compressed files, weren't updated for performance reasons.
In the case of concern, the disk activity light and all other indications of life cease, for perhaps an hour or more before I Pause or Stop. Then I have to click on the 'X' to close the extra window.

Just try to uncheck comprehensive file scanning and compressed file scanning from NAV options and check..
It it doesn't work, then try to scan from symantec.com/securitycheck and if that file is a bug or somethin
