I've been using NAV2004 for quite some time now. When my subscribtion was nearly expiring i thought i should switch to NIS 2006. However the installation from the NIS CD fails: Error: "9999,171 The installation encountered an error and is unable to continue". Symantec states the problem is because of LiveUpdate and directs to a page about installing LU online. However the install of LiveUpdate fails: "Install Error:10. The LiveUpdate install failed because LiveUpdate was not able to register one of its components. You need to have write access to the registry to install LiveUpdate."
My OS is Windows XP Pro SP2. I'm always logged in as administrator, i tried to do it in safe mode, tried to create permission in registry as symantec says but no good.
I need a hand,
Regards.

This is the identical problem I currently have.
I have been on the Symantec Live Chat line over 9 times in the last 2 days, occupying about 19 hours in total at my PC, without any satisfactory solution.
Plenty of suggestions and fix instructions, but nothing that works.
I also need help, cos Symantec are f.....g useless so far.

Thank you for pointer to SymNRT, but I've used that at least 5 times over the last 2 days. It removes the Symantec/Norton stuff OK but still will not fix the registry issue that prevents LiveUpdate from loading correctly. Without being able to "see" LiveUpdate, any attempt to reinstall Norton ends in a fatal error.
The most comprehensive fix provided by Symantec (which they guaranteed would work) is at :
http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2004110113064039?Open&src=con_ols_nam
I followed it to the letter but ended up with the same Install Error 10 on LiveUpdate.

I would have tried another fix had you been around when this issue cropped up. However I have long since sent the disks back to Symantec, with a rude letter, to claim my money back. I now use the PC Tools suite of products and find them quite good. Symantec are forever off my shopping list. Thanks anyway adama.

I had same problems as I could not reinstall my nav2004. I used a additional tool called ccremove.reg which when clicked on removes the symantic reg entries. Got this from norton. Also used cleanssc.exe. the ccremove.reg did wonders.

Had the couldn't register a component problem on a Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 system installing Norton AntiVirus 2003, 2005, and lusetup.exe. lusetup.exe would get the "Install Error 10: The LiveUpdate install failed because LiveUpdate was not able to register one of its components" error.
Tried http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2005040111542713 but the problem didn't change and was still there after.
Tried http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313222 and even though the secedit command given ended with "task completed with error...", lusetup.exe and then Norton AntiVirus 2005 with all live updates installed without error.
