I am new and am a mod on another forum and hate the noobies that just jump in asking questions. However I am stuck. I want the data on a hard drive that was in my laptop. I run xp pro on a dell latitude d600. I was just going to reboot, everything was working fine. I got NTLDR is misssing. I have tried putting in the disc and booting from the optical drive which did the same thing. I have been able to get to recovery console and tried fix boot ( i very likly am not getting the exact names such as i know it was not fix boot but was a dos command that meant that, sorry am not real savvy). I have a new hard drive in the laptop and all is fine.
Dell wants the hard drive back and is all over me to send it. I intend to but need to get the data if i can. There are unreplaceable photos, vids and also my wrok files. yes i know about back up however i did not foresee when the woman moved out she would take the backup discs, as she did.
Is there a way short of sending it to recovery specialists that the data can be recovered?
I have read that 2 hard drives can be on the latitude D600 but for the life of me can not find the 2nd slot and have been hours on there site.
I was on microsofts site looking for "Bcupdate2 utility" because 1 of your topics on NTLDR suggested that and i seem to be stuck in a circle between 3 pages and never get the Bcupdate2 utility.
Any suggestions would be great.
Looks like a great group of forums here, i will be around for awhile now that i have found it (somewhere in the google search for this topic)
thanks

The directions for xp in Cudni's link above are correct .
If that first suggestion does not work boot back into recovery console again and enter these commands :
chkdsk /r ***this may take over an hour to finish***
bootcfg /rebuild *** when prompted press 1 enter , enter , enter
exit
