I am having a new problem with my computer and it appears to be related to Norton AntiVirus 2006.
Today when I booted my computer I received some error messages after the Windows desktop appeared. I clicked “OK” or “Cancel” a few times and they eventually disappeared. I was able to use my desktop normally.
Later I rebooted, and the same thing happened.
Now, every time I try to open Microsoft WORD, I also get a series of events. They are:
The WORD splash screen appears.
I then get the error message:
"Norton AntiVirus 2006"
“Please wait while Windows configures Norton AntiVirus 2006”.
Seconds later with no intervention on my part I get a second error message which covers up the first:
“Norton AntiVirus 2006 does not support the Repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall”.
Nothing happens until I click “OK” at which point the error messages momentarily disappear and reappear, with the second one on top of the first, as they were before. If I now click “OK” again, the error messages disappear for good and WORD opens.
If I close WORD and attempt to open it again, the process repeats itself.
As a matter of background, about a year ago I was prompted to renew my Norton AntiVirus 2003 subscription. The option was also given to move up to the new NAV (I guess that would have been NAV 2005). I did not accept the option, and renewed my NAV 2003.
This year, faced with the same option I elected to go to NAV 2006. I uninstalled NAV 2003, including using the Symantec tool to remove all traces of Norton products, then installed NAV 2006.
Since I installed NAV 2006 I’ve had a few minor but persistent annoyances, but I also have the distinct impression that my computer is running slower than it was before.
I am running Windows XP Home with SP2 on a Gateway with a Pentium4 2.60 GHz with 512 MB of RAM.
How can I solve this problem of error messages when I boot and when I try to open WORD? They are very annoying.
I am considering removing Norton AntiVirus (despite having paid money for it), canceling the automatic billing for annual update subscriptions (not sure yet how to do that) and switch to another antivirus product.

Thank you, Cudni, for the information. This seems like very sloppy work on Symantec's part. It appears they created an update without even testing it to see if it is compatable with a simple reboot or opening of common programs.
I agree with what one poster (DrDemento) on Broadband Reports said, that is there is no point in uninstalling and reinstalling NAV; the moment NAV updates, the problem will reappear. I guess I'll have to wait until either someone more knowledgable in computing comes up with a fix, or Symantec acknowledges that they created a problem, and fixes it themselves. I hope that Symantec is honest enough to realize that they created a problem and works to fix it. It is really a pain to have to go through this process every time I reboot or open a WORD document!

Symantec has referred me to a technical report for 2006 that basically says uninstall & reinstall (http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nav.nsf/docid/2005092822170206?Open&src=con_ols_nam).
I find it sad that Symantec is pretending this is an individual problem of an individual user and not a mass problem due to a faulty Live Update.
I suppose I will uninstall & reinastall my NAV tonight when I have some uninterrupted time. Of course, that will work ONLY if Symanted realized they made a new mistake and removed the faulty Live Update. If they haven't, the problem will reoccur as soon as the reinstalled NAV Live Updates.
By the way, the technical document they referred me to was "Last Modified" on July 26, 2006, only three days ago, so I guess they realized their mistake.

I got the same message to uninstall and reinstall. When I tried to reinstall I recieved an error messsage saying "This product requires Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or greater or a 32-bit version of Windows XP. Setup will now exit."
When I went to Norton's site it said this error message is caused when trying to load NIS 2006 to Windows 98/ME, however, I have Windows XP???
I originally installed this in April of 2006 on the same computer/operating system.
Norton is very difficult to deal with when you have a problem but very receptive when you want to buy something and they're getting money from you.

Hi All
Greetings!!!
This problem is caused by a recent update on 28th July liveupdate.
This problem can be solved in this way:
Solution :
Step 1 : Download & Install Windows Cleanup Utility
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe
Step 2 : Click on Open Windows Cleanup Utility(Start --> All Programs -->
Windows Cleanup Utility)
Step 3 : Removed the Entry by the name : NAV2006 12.2.1.13
Step 4 : Close all the programs
Step 5 : Restart the computer to verify
Reason to do is, the above said file is conflicting to the recent liveupdate. It has been identified by symantec it has been revoked on 29th 7AM PST itself. Even uninstallation and reinstallation will work after the above said
time but the above steps will consume your time.
Regards
Peter

I solved the problem on my end yesterday b7 uninstalling & reinstalling NAV 2006. Apparently the offending Live Update has been removed by Norton.
