I am having a problem with Norton Anti-Virus.
There are times when I have mulitple instances of LUCOMS~1.EXE running in task manager. I have had up to 7 instances running at once. Another opens up when I click on liveupdate, but always goes away after update is complete.
I have liveupdate turned OFF, and always update manually.
While there can be multiple instances running, they don't seem to using CPU but each one is using memory, and that adds up sometimes to over 70K.
I have run ewido, Spyware Doctor, Spybot, and Norton, but everything comes out clean except for a few tracking cookies from time to time.
I have Spyware Doctor, SpywareGuard and Spyware Blaster all running.
I have Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Any ideas out there as to what could be causing this problem?

What kind of NAV are you running? Is it single user or the corporate edition, and what year is it? _________________

Hi raganne,
Heres a tip if you have a norton 2006 version. Open ur product , click options->Norton antivirus.
In the following screen,look out for miscellaneous on your left and click on it.
On your right pane, look out for a section which reads "how to protect my symantec product" and under that UNCHECK turn on protection for my symantec product.
Now go to c:\program files\symantec\live update and rename the file LuComServer_3_0.EXE to LuComs.old
You should not see any instance of it after doing these.
If you have any previous version of norton, then go to Options and lookout for Liveupdate under internet on the left pane. On your right pane, uncheck turn on automatic Liveupdate recommended.
Just give it a shot and let me know.

I've also noticed that just recently mulitple LUCOMS~1.EXE processes have been running simultaneously. The solution offered by HD does seem to have stopped this behavior. Is this a quirk with NAV2006?

Hi all,
LUCOMS~1.EXE is a process belonging to Norton Antivirus and is responsible for automatic updating. It is not unusual to have many instances of this running at the same time. It is not a problem and they go away when they are done.
It also can be malware, but since you have scanned and come up clean, I don't think that is the case.
I don't know if stopping them from running will do any harm to your computer, but since you have shut off automatic updating, please be sure to do manual updates often.

I wanted NAV2006 to auto-update so the file LuComServer_3_0.EXE has to be there. The problem has gone away by un-checking the "how to protect my symantec product" option and I still have auto-update fully functional.
Thanks so much for the help. I hope that I don't encounter the "major" issues with NAV2006. So far this has been the only real problem.

hello all
seeing as previous posts concerning this issue haven't been for a couple of months, I don't know if anyone will read/respond to this but I have recently run into problems that seem to be connected to multiple instances of the process lucoms~1.exe. These problems include malfunctions not limited to NAV, but affect and cause other programs to freeze as well, and seem directly connected to the multiple instances of lucoms~1.exe. I can only assume this is malware in disguise, since I am unable to run scans. I have tried uninstalling NAV, but my access is denied. Any ideas?

Good to see the questions coming in!. The multiple instances of lucoms~1.exe can be resolved by running a successfull live update. Thats nothing but the auto live update feature trying to access the live update server but failing. The reason for the failure may be due to a bug in the internet settings. First, go to NAV options -> misc and uncheck the symantec protection.Go IE options-> connections. If you dont have a dialup connection, please make sure that the the dialup and VPN settings box is cleared out and empty. Apply the settings and do a live update and voila! check what happens.
Please let me know if that doesn't work.

Multiple LUCOMs was introduced in LiveUpdate 3.1, possibly even 3.0 (I'm not sure). The reason was to have a higher level of stability during liveupdate.
DO NOT rename the LUCOMserver exe. Doing so will prevent you from getting any liveupdates.
The LUCOMserver processes should go away within 10 minutes after Liveupdate has completed.
Bottom line is that this is not a problem.

I have around 30 instances of this process running when I try and uninstall Symantec Live Update and Norton Save and Restore. Neither of them will uninstall and neither of them will run.
How do I get them to uninstall?
Also, I (apparently) have Norton Anti Virus installed although there is no evidence in the start menu that it is, it only shows in the Add/Remove program pane. There is no option to uninstall NAV on the Add/Remove pane, how do I get rid of it?
Hope you can help as I am very confused!

I have the SAME problem after reformatting and changing from PCcillin to Norton 360 ( i love norton, pcillin was garbage). Hopefully this works on the 360 also!
